Although it isn't a good idea to have a bedtime snack, people still eat before heading off to bed. Often times people will suffer indigestion if the eat too close to bedtime. Did you know that laying on your left side will reduce indigestion? What is your favorite bedtime snack?

I know that it isn't healthy to eat and then lie down soon afterwards. For years I couldn't do it because it made me kind of sick. But I guess that I can get away with it every so often now, and I am slipping back into old bad habits. last night I ate far too much right before bed. A big bowl of oatmeal and a few other things. I just love my oatmeal, lol! *laugh* ^_^ But I know that I shouldn't do it. Partially it was because I had to rush to get ready to go somewhere last night and I hadn't had time for my full supper. But I still shouldn't have done it *laugh*

Although my hubby is thinner than I am, he is starting to get rounder at the midsection. He snacks from 8:30 p.m. right up until he goes to bed.

I aways have a toasted tuna or sardine sandwich before bedtime. I know it gives me heartburn, but I have the packet of indegestion tablets beside my bed. If I didn't snack before bedtime, I would waken during the night and I would just have to have my sandwich before I could go back to sleep.

EAting tuna or sardines at night would kill my stomach. Even with the Tums.

I can't eat before bedtime because I will wake up with heartburn if I do- it will wake me up from a sound sleep, and it's just not worth it. I have never heard about the left side thing, either. It must be that that position facilitates the emptying of the stomach into the small intestine easier- if you look at a diagram of the esophagus, stomach, and small intestines, you'll see why that is so (I just pulled out one of my Anatomy & Physiology books to check it out).

Waking up with heartburn is the worse. I usually don't eat anything for 3 hours before I go to bed.

Snacking at bedtime is actually a good habit for some people who can not sleep or don't get a good sleep to rest body and mind.
But there is a diet for what one could eat/drink before going to bed. Usually a cup or a half of cold milk proves good. Eating something before going to bed increases blood flow towards stomach, which automatically decreases blood flow to your brain. Body sends more blood below the neck part to digest the food in stomach. This helps reducing brain's activities and the brain rests, in other words, one goes to sleep.
This bed time should not be heavy though, just enough to feel sleepy. This snack quantity could differ from person to person.
However, for people who can sleep easily at nights, eating something before bed time is not advisable.

I often enjoy a small glass of milk at bedtime. It helps when you are unable to sleep.

I am guilty of late night snacking. I don't know why, but I always seem to get the munchies at night after my daughter goes to bed and I'm laying down. Sometimes I just ignore the hunger pangs because I know you aren't supposed to eat anything after 7pm. Other times I'll make a bag of popcorn and only eat some of it or get a small bowl of ice cream. I've noticed that I've gained a few pounds after I started snacking at night, but I'm not overweight by any means. Nevertheless, it's my body's way of telling me to cut it out lol so I should probably listen.

I didn't know that. Thanks for telling us that. I don't like to snack before bedtime. I only do it sometimes in the evening when watching a movie. I don't get indigestion. I have no favorite snacks either.

I didn't know laying on your left side reduces indigestion. Maybe that is why they tell pregnant women to lay on their left sides. :-) My favorite bedtime snack is fruit or honey wheat pretzels.

I eat grapes for my nighttime snack. Raising the head of your bed helps with GERD also. I have 2 X 4 under the top part of the bed. The first night we slept in it..we kept having to climb back up to the head. We seemed keep sliding downward. That has been a few years ago and we are well adjusted to the different in height now.

A wedge pillow will also help. The store I worked at sold many of these for that very reason.

True fact, bad habit.
I didn't know about the left side thing, I usually eat chocolates, and by the way it turns out I'm hungry when I'm laying on my bed with my laptop.

It's a bad habit, but I can't break it. I have one piece of chocolate before bed. It's one of my little vices. I don't allow myself much chocolate, but I can't give it up completely. And it doesn't bother me much, since it's just one small peice of chocolate.

I don't prefer to eat bedtime snack,I usually eat at the right time, But sometimes I feel hungry then I take some snack because It's really hard to sleep if you feel hungry. I prefer to eat food that is easy to digest, night time I don't want heavy food. Then If Im hungry then I'll take a slice of bread and drink juice or milk. I don't know about laying on the left side will reduce indigestion.

I don't snack every night, but I often has a bedtime snack. When I have a snack it is usually oatmeal. I find that when I have a dinner that is too light I become hungry about bedtime and the burning and gnawing keeps me awake. On these nights I have a small bowl of oatmeal...might as well lower my cholesterol and get some protein while I cure the gnawing! Ha! Yes, lying on one's left side will help w/ indigestion as it aids in moving the food lower into the digestive trace! This is also the preferred side for administering an enema or suppository too!
