With me, right under keeping a dog for a pet. They are beautiful creatures, very trusting. I used to raise Arabians when I lived in the States. I had them for the pure pleasure of watching them outside my window running across the pasture. I would spend hours grooming them, so peaceful. They would sense when I had a bad day and would give me a hug to cheer me up. Riding on a country road, wind blowing through my hair, just me and my horse. That is heaven.

Horses are not just for the rich. I had 5 horses and they were all easy keepers. I used to get rolled bales of hay, 1500 pounds and that would last all month, $20.00 a bale delivered. They didn't require much grain as they had plenty of pasture to roam around on. Actually it was cheaper for me to keep horses then it was for my dogs.

I'm middle class and I had horses. The only reason that I don't have horses now is that I moved to another country. I lived in Georgia at the time. Land was cheap and I built my own lean-to for the horses. It all depends on the breed of horse you get and whether or not they are easy keepers. If they were not easy keepers, I did not buy them. My first horse only cost $250.00 to buy. A lot less than buying a car!

Horses are sometimes adopted as "companion animals" from horse rescue organizations. These horses may have been injured in some way or are not well enough to be used as riding or performance horses. They are adopted as a companion to a person or to other animals. In this way, they certainly are "pets" in that they are kept simply for the pleasure and enjoyment of their companionship.
