Puppy Mills

I recently became aware of an atrocity happening right in my own backyard. I live in Ohio. What I never knew was that my homestate is lousy with puppy mills. For those who don't know puppy mills are backyard breeders who have no regard for life. They take a male and female dog of any breed but usually expensive types and breed them, with no regard for genetics, nutrition or general welfare of the mother or father. They breed the dog repeatedly as often as nature will allow until she is so physically drained she is unable to give anymore. At which point she is no longer an asset and she is disposed of. Puppies themselves endure cold temperatures, overheating, malnutrition, and no veterinary care.
My question is this. WHY? No business can survive without revenue. Who continues to support these people. I can't imagine anybody intentionally buying from circumstances like these, but I wonder how well people research their potential breeders. Check them out. Show up unnanounced. Look around the premises.
If NOBODY buys from these cruel people they will be forced to stop doing what they do. Please Please buyer beware.

I have gotten a dog from a family member of mine that got it from a puppy mill and said when they got it they had to shave all its hair off cuz it was so matted. It a little pekenese dog. Most larger puppy mills imbreed their dogs also which will give the puppies health problems in the long run also. Puppy mills are sick and I would never buy a dog from a puppy mill beause of the health the puppy would have later on in life.

the fact that these people breed dogs with remarkable pedigree makes their puppies very marketable, also there are a lot of petshops around who would readily consign pups so long as they profit enough.
so if you are a good buyer, i suggest that you really visit the breeder site and inspect the condition from which the pups are subjected to. also it is wise to see the damn and sire if possible to have a clue of proper rearing and treatment

Actually.. puppy mill puppies very often have dismal pedigrees. They take purebred dog A and breed it to purebred dog B without any regard to pedigree, genetics, etc. They just breed whatever dog breed or breeds happens to be in vogue at the moment.

Good post!
Just another note that those cute little puppies in the window of your local pet store are often puppy mill puppies. Even if you figure you're 'rescuing' the puppies by buying them, you're not. You're perpetuating the cycle and supporting puppy mills and the pet stores that buy from them.
Don't buy pet store puppies!
