My neighbors tried to kill my dogs!!

I have a 1 year old Mini Dachshund, and a new 2 month old PittBull puppy. They have stated to me when I got the puppy that they were scared to have a pittbull in the neighborhood. Well, I have had them all of my life, and raised and trained them well. I also have a cat, and am not worried about him also. I have no qualms about her being around my yound daughter or anyone elses. It has been proven, by myself and I am sure many others that you can raise a pittbull not to be violent. Anyway, I assured them she would be aclamated to their dogs, children, and she would always be in her own fenced yard and if they were still scared they should not let their children jump my fence to take the short cut to the park. Well this was about 2 weeks ago, and this morning I found a small dish of what seems to be antifreeze stuck under my fence between my home and theirs. I called the sheriffs Department and they said they could not do anything because I cannot prove they did it, and my dogs did not get into it or get hurt. I am furious! There is no other way it could have gotten there as it is between two fenced in locked yards. The only reason my babies did not get into it is because I kept them in until I could go out with them this morning. I am not sure the exact effects of antifreeze on a dog, but have heard it will kill them. What in the world am I to do now? I will not get rid of my dogs, and I will not allow these people to hurt them. How do you suggest I take care of this? Thanks in advance and any help would be greatly appreciated.

you need to place a camera or video outside your home so you can catch them trying to kill your dog.otherwise you cant prove they are doing this to your dogs an anitifreeze will kill them, but i dont see nothing wrong with you haveing the dogs as long as they are in a fence in yard.

Really this is the best idea, a picture is worth a thousand words and I would not allow your dog out without you until you are able to catch this on tape or at least watch very closely out your window. If they tried once they will again. I'm sure you have nice dogs, it makes me sick that anyone would do this to any living creature. I suggest also building a taller fense so no one can go into your property. Really even without the dog those kids don't have the right to go on your property to cut across to the park.

I agree that this is probably your best avenue to follow. That way, you will have video/pictures to show to the sheriff as well as to the ASPCA if there is one nearby. Those people should not be allowed to get away with harming your babies.

I agree. Put in a hidden camera or something and contact an animal rescue place for ideas. I'm so sorry that you have to go through that. I don't know how anyone can purposely hurt innocent animals.

That's terrible, I agree you should get a camera or something. Antifreeze is very dangerouse to all animals.
It smells and tastes very sweet to your dog and is very appealing to him. Ethylene glycol is toxic however, and each winter, many animals are killed by it.
Symptoms of toxicity include seizures, vomiting, stumbling and lethargy leading to kidney failure. Make sure to keep your antifreeze out of your dog’s reach. Keep checking before letting them outside for now.
If you suspect that your dog has ingested antifreeze, take your dog to the veterinarian immediately.
Good luck, I hope you catch them.

your dog must be violent, anyways dashunds are pretty violent

Well, if you read correctly you would see that it is the pitt bull they are scared of and she is only 2 months old and has never been violent, nor has my dachshund. They are just ignorant to the truth as is seems a lot of people are. An animal thrives on love and attention, and without it they can become unsociable and a danger to society. Any dog, not just pitt bulls. Mine get plenty of both along with good training.

BigBad you are so right!!! They have been given a bad name due to ignorance and bad owners. I have never ever had a pittbull that hurt anyone or even tried. My last girl was 14 when she passed and she never hurt a flea. We live in the country and even the squirrels felt safe in our yard..lolShe would bark and growl like crazy at a stranger, but as soon as they came into the yard she would roll over and put her stomach up to be rubbed. It is how you raise them!!

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Chances are that the owners were cruel. See you heard about it, but you didn't actually know the owners or the dog. The media blows pit bulls out of proportion and I think it's wrong.

Matter of fact, my brother has two pit bulls, and they are the nicest dogs on earth. These dogs need to be loved. The dogs you heard about were beaten, were abused, and you are just looking at the medias story without finding out about the dogs. I can bet money that if you got a pit bull of your own and treated it with respect and love like it deserves, you would love and cherish that dog.

I get furious to see people trying to harm animals let alone dogs.In this case, after being assured that the pets were harmless, the neighbours went ahead and tried to feed antifreeze. Now that is really a disturbing episode and I suggest you better look out for your pets and your kids as well. As for the neighbours why don't you invite them over for dinner and mix the same antifreeze in their dishes? That way you'd be able to conclude what effect it has on humans as well. Am sure the sheriff will understand too.
But jokes apart, people who don't have sympathy for animals do not deserve to be a part of our society. All of them should be quarantined somewhere in the deepest jungles of Africa where they'd be at the mercy of some really bad and short tempered animals. I wonder what the animals would feed them with. Its a different thing when the neighbours were scared of the fact that the pets might be violent and harmful to them, but am sure its not the first time they've come across pets!!!
In a nutshell, people who don't have sympathy for animals do not deserve any sympathy from the rest of the mankind.

That's quite shocking! With the reports in the news and the hysteria whipped up by the media it's not surprising that they have concerns, but this was a cowerdly and indiscriminantly dangerous act.
Putting a camera out isn't a bad idea but do you suspect they will try it again?
If you or the Sheriff had spoken to them about it they might try something different next time.
I would suggest that for the next few weeks you make a quick check of your yard each morning before letting your dogs out.
I would say that you should "name and shame" them by letting other neighbours know whats happened , but without physical proof it's just your word against theirs.

Oh I told one neighbor about it in a nonchalant kind of way, and she is the mouth of the street, so it's probably out there by now. I am home most all of the time, so will be on high alert. Hopefully they failed and will not try again. I am trying the approach of trying to get them to accept that she is not nor will be violent. If they are scared of her, she will one day sense this. They do not need to be scared.

You called the wrong people. The Sheriff's department cares little about such matters. Rather, you should have called someone who strictly looks into these matter. The Sheriff's department could have had the fluid tested and took prints, but things like this are not at the top of their list. Antifreeze attracts cats and dogs because there is a sweetness to it. What it does is slowly (and painfully) poison the animal. Call you local vet to see who to contact about this. You may also want to get an attorney to issue a letter of warning to these people, if possible. Tainted meat will probably be next!

I thought about that also, the meat part. I have called the ASPCA here and they are sending someone out to talk with me and help me find a solution to this problem. If I can never really trust them about this, I may have to borrow the money for a high privacy fence on their side. I'll make sure the back side is downright ugly..lol

Well, they saw the police here, and there were a few glances and points there way, so they know I know. I will not confront them directly as to not make an all out war here, but they know. I am just telling them it is being investigated, and they should be really careful because someone is trying to kill dogs around the neighborhood. I am sure they will think I would do it to their dogs in return, but this would never happen. Them thinking it could do no harm though. I would love to have their dogs just for a day to clean them up and pamper them a bit. they are a mess. I give them treats every now and then and they act like they haven't eaten in a week.

I sympathize on what you feel. I'm an animal lover as well. For the meantime, I think it will be better to keep an eye on your dog. We can't blame them though, even if you say that your pittbull is harmless, who will believe? By the looks of that dog, the built.. it's definitely a fighting machine. lol..
If your neighbors have kids, maybe their kids are the ones responsible for the antifreeze.. it will be better to talk to your neighbors about it.
Call your vet and ask them for it's effect in your dog. :( The effects may not show now, but in a few days.. So, it's better to act now.

I found it before my dogs did, so it was not ingested. I know the rep for pittbulls is bad, but she is just a 2 month old puppy, and she is being raised around their children and animals. It was not their kids, I know for a fact. Their kids love my dogs, and play with them often.

That is just sickening how could a person do this! I mean if your dog was a threat, maybe but stil i couldnt see doing that to a dog! I think I agree with a previous poster, get cameras and set them up, keep your dog inside with you as much as possible right now and even possibly talking to them calmly and letting them know you are watching them now. this is just sickening, how mean.

They know I am watching. I could see them peeking out the windows when the police where here. They have dogs, Shi Tzus, and they are always getting out because they do not take care of their sides of their fence. I have chain link all the way around, and they have tacked on some sort of chicken wire or something on their side to keep theirs in, and they are always out. I could have called the shelter many a time, but never do. I always help keep them in if they are not home and so forth. I have tried to explain to them that I have brought this pittbull home as a puppy and she will be around their dogs and children, and mine also. She will not be violent. I have raised too many. I know what it takes. They are just being unreasonable.

See, that's what I don't like about media. They blow stories about pit bulls COMPLETELY out of proportion! The dogs are NOT naturally mean and aggressive. It's the OWNERS! Abusive owners hit and treat the dogs cruelly. Then these dogs come abusive and aggressive as well. The media exploits these dogs as dangerous and such because they hear about a pit bull attack. Most likely the owners of that dog treated it horribly.
I think what your neighbors did is completely out of control! And their kids take a shortcut through your back yard you say? Why do you let them :\. I wouldn't let kids go through my property in the first place. If they tried to kill you dog because they are worried about their children being hurt on property they shouldn't be on in the first place, they should face some sort of criminal charges.

Well, I never said anything about the kids before because they are good kids, they are pretty much on their own over there. They had an older brother that was killed a few years back and their Mom is kind of a recluse, and is probably depressed as she never leaves the house. The boys cut through and help me in my yard on the weekends, and swim in our pool in the summer etc. They call me Aunt chelle, I have never had a problem with it until now. The kids love my dogs, it is the uninformed parents that worry me. As long as those kids are around my dogs there will never be a problem. My Pitt puppy is already 3X's the size of my mini dachshie and the mini is still the boss..lol
I am just hoping we can work this all out amicably.

ASPCA!
That is who you need to contact.
Yes antifreeze will kill dogs I'm pretty sure of it.
That's so horrible, I can't imagine ever trying to hurt a dog or cat. It breaks my heart & I can totally understand why you would be ticked off.
Maube you could not confront them about it but istead be all sneaky like a cat...
and try to catch them in the act, video tape it or take pictures of them doing this. Then you will have the proof that you need.
LOL
I'm so horrible, but that's what I would do if I ws in your shoes.

Some people really take the cake. I've known others like this and I know it is hard to prove unless you catch them right in the act. The cops can't do much unless someone saw them put it there and you know darn well they won't admit to it. As someone suggested a video camera might be best. Set it up and hopefully catch them doing it and then the police can't argue with that sort of evidence. Short of that I would not let your dogs out there alone unless you know for sure they are not home. That way you can keep them safe.

keep an eye with your dogs, if you should leave them alone, place them in a secure area, say inside the house. but the best thing you should do though is to educate your neighbors, let them be friends with your dogs or encourage them to even own one so that they may understand how wonderful pets they are

Wow - that is horrible. Have you talked to them about the antifreeze? You should go to their door with the dish and ask them if it is theirs. You don't want to ruin your relationship with them, but talk to them about it. Also, as a side note dogs will usually not drink antifreeze because they now add a special scent to it that makes dogs not want to drink it.
I agree that you need to install a camera. My neighbor was spraying my dogs down with water last winter and the police said there was no way of knowing that he was doing it and not me (why someone would do that to their own dogs, I don't know). He said I needed a picture or video of him doing it. I never installed a camera because I am poor, but one morning I caught him doing it and yelled at him (we already had a bad relationship) and he seemed to stop. So, maybe confronting them would work for you too.
Good luck, I hope this helped!!

I agree with the previous comments, a hidden camera is the best solution, and help from a local support group for pets, aid is never bad. Those who try to kill animal should be punished, it is attempted murder also right. And you should have asked the police to fingerprint the evidence, I mean the dish or even the surface of the fence. If it matches, then they are guilty.
