Discounts encourage spendings rather than help consumers save

I always end up buying more whenever I come across a discount store. Not that I am a compulsive shopper but because I see value for money I spend a lot in total. So I really dont know whether discounts really help you to save or they are just a means to encourage spendings amongst consumers. How is it with you?
