Is it okay if you push your child for your aspirations and not for their own?

I have this friend who says that he always does what his parents tell him what to do and he thinks maybe it's for his own good. I see him as a person who doesn't think for himself but always have to be dictated to him. Is it the parents fault that he is that way? I kind of feel that he's chained to something and not free to make his own decisions. What's you're take on this?
