Are cars an essential like a telephone?

I remember reading when I was little that we would all be using jetpacks to get around by now. There would be aircars and moving sidewalks all over the cities.
But still we have cars. They use fossil fuels and pollute the air. (Where's crystallic fusion when you need it?!) Nearly everyone's family in the US owns a car, except maybe inner city dwellers. Are they as essential as telephones? Can we do without them?

In ro not everybody has a car. Though the polution is still at a high lever. I do not think car are as essential as telephones , telephones are a way of connection people , cars just a way to get arround in your own schedule.
