Who invented the zipper and why?

Whitcomb L. Judson invented the zipper.As far as why I would think that was fairly obvious.

I am not for sure, so going out on a limb here I think it was created by a mail man for their mail bags. Something came from that, and I can't think if it was velcro or the zipper. I really am leaning towards the zipper, but it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong, LOL.
