Most of the Fisher Price toys and Baby Einstein are good for that age range and it helps in their learning process. I personally like lullaby cd's or other music to help aid in getting the child to go to sleep.

Wow there are so many things out there. But if all else fails it is alwasy good to get bonds or sometype of saving for the child. Even a little bit can turn into a lot over the years and most people believe it ornot do not save for college. This is the age to get something like this becuase the child is so young it is not like he will notice not getting a toy.

Puzzles are great at this age, as long as they are easy to do, also, little boys will love trains, trucks cars, big balls (little girls would too of course!) and dolls, coloring books, crayons, markers, sandbox toys, swing sets.. there are alot of things that would be good for this age.
