Have you thought of doing a hobby course on fixing cars and then trying again. If you were in Australia I'd say seek a Government apprenticeship when they will take a number of girls into these trades.
Wanting to do something and demonstrating that you can , can be quite different. Good luck, stay happy, love the picture.

Absolutely! I belive girls should learn the basics of fixing cars. When my girls were first learning how to drive, I insisted that they know how to change a tire when it's flat, how to change their own oil, and how to go about replacing bulbs and fuses. I also thought that they should learn the basics of finding out how to really 'listen' to their car when it's misbehaving, so they will know that sometimes the noises it makes are a helpful diagnostic aid. As far as changing a head gasket, or something like that, I don't really know that most guys would attempt that themselves either. My girls know far more about cars and trucks than most people, and from them learning these basics, they've helped themselves lots of times throughout the years.

Thank you katyzzz! I thought I should add that it was me (Mom) who taught them this, and not their Dad. They have actually thanked me for making them learn this, and they have changed their own flats, and changed their own oil etc.

I agree with you totally! I don't know 100% how to fix cars, but I do have a better idea than the majority of women on how to do it. When we bought our new car, I read the whole manual and everything else that went with it, my other half just guessed and tinkered.

yes-even if they don't know how to do everything on a car they should learn the basic things like-change a flat tire-change the oil--how to clean off the battery terminals-simple things so they don't get rip off by dishonest mechanics

Ofcourse, girls should also learn and do what boys can, because like in the other thread about BOYS LEARNING TO COOK, girls should also know how to fix cars because this is kinda important, specially when the girl got stuck in some weird roads and she's all alone, if she can't fixed it, she's in big trouble.

I think this issue is one of gender stereotypes. Boys do boy things and girls do girl things. But in the 21st century, regardless of the country, surely we are at a stage where we realise that any person, regardless of their gender, should be free to explore their interests and acquire skills.
I am a guy, I cook, and I fix the car. There is no reason a gal can't cook and fix the car also.
Whether it is compulsory is a different question. Since in Australia, cars are a major part of most people's lives, I think it would be prudent to teach car maintenance at school to everyone.
And cooking should also be taught to everyone.
Cheers everyone that's my opinion...

That was really interesting and very well expressed.
Learning to cook and fix cars at school would be really good and also how to manage a family.
I think we do WORK well but we don't generally manage home and family so well. Dealing with feeling, emotions and conflict is really important too.
But I think we have to guard against making teachers responsible for everything.
A very thought provoking response!

Well, I fix my own car. I bought the book and learned how to do it all by myself. They charge you an arm and a leg to fix it in the shop and I like to keep my money so doing it myself is a big help. Plus it help if you need to make a side job of it. I live in an apartment complex and people are always knocking on my door asking me to do their brakes and oil and struts. It really does pay off in the end to learn about cars.
At the same time I often pity the girl who knows nothing about a car because if it breaks the mechanic she takes it too can add on a ton of things that were never broke in the first place just to make a buck.

This is a really interesting comment. Bravo and congratulations on teaching yourself. Perhaps your success will inspire others not only with cars but with other things, and for both sexes. You have made a really great contribution to our discussion. Thank you and thanks, too, to all the other contributors who help inspire you to get there!

Girls should learn to fix if they drive it.If they dont know to drive it may be they must learn to drive and then try to fix them up.I think most buys also dont know to fix it So those people also learn to fix it.

Yes I do believe that girls should learn to fix and work on cars. I have a daughter and she love's it when I work on one of the cars, or if I have work to do she will help me, the best she can. She's only 2 and a half. Oh, and I'm an automotive technition. I have my own business. I think girls can do just as good a job as a boy.

My son would have loved to have watched his father fixing the car when he was 2 and 1/2. He was a handful and my husband couldn't stand having him around.
Instead he learned to cook with me.
He taught himself to fix things later, got a motor bike, pulled it apart, put it together, but when he got on and started it , the bike took off leaving him behind. He hadn't fixed the seat back on.

Well, I think if it is something they are interested in yes, I do think girls should know the basics, like changing a tire and changing oil and stuff.

Its not brain surgery. If you are involved in driving you should be involved in car repair. The more self-reliant everyone is the better off they will be. Its good income on one hand and a money saver in the other.

I don't like to fix cars, myself. But I think women should know the basics, change a flat, change oil. Though beyond that, today's cars are so computerized, that knowing about generators, spark plugs, and so on makes no sense. Then again, if you don't know the basics and something goes wrong... it might be just the opportunity to meet the guy upstairs, or some hunk driving down the street. Of course, that's assuming you've got great legs.
