are online games an addiction

nowadays theres innumerable people spending their time on online games and what it does to them or how it affects them is sure a big topic to debate.... im not against it atall but believe that it should only be for fun and shouldnt be an addiction then we're gonna hav consequences , for eg i have a friend who works for 8hrs and then comes home to a faily but has no time for them as he is busy playing games (especiaally strategy games) which require all your attention. and you know what he doesnt bother abt food, sleep, anything! it ends up in such a way that his family doesnt get much of his time as he plays n rests say for 3-4 hrs so do you think having fun to this extent is good or bad? let me repeat im not against it as i too do play online but i guess there are lots of people like him too.....
