Hey Any instrument played to tune will sound good. I am sure you are a good Violinist because it is very difficult to master the intricacies of the violin. In fact I did start taking violin classes when I was young but gave up because it was a pain in the neck. If you are playing the violin hats off to you, continue the good work because given the type of youth this world is churning there are any young violinists left. You will be in demand in the near future. As for those who don't appreciate your music I must say they are tone deaf.

Any instrument when palyed wrong sounds horrible, but if the person palying the violin know what he or she is doing, then it's very beautiful

Seriously, listen to Menuhin or Grappelli, to name just two. Is that "noise"? The violin is one of the most subtle, dynamic and lyrical of all instruments. The only advice I'd give is "listen to the instrument". It makes the only comments that really matter. Bluntly, I've played music for 44 years, and I don't have to give a damn about what anyone thinks of it, or me. But I do care what the instruments say.

I just started taking violin lessons in September, and boy, do I make noise:D -- I have a wonderful teacher though, we are tackling the problems I am having one by one, and eventually I'm sure I can play a tune without me grimicing at the sound I'm making. I even have one song now that I dare play in public, which is quite adequate I just acquired a book, "How Equal Temperament Ruined Harmony (and Why You Should Care)" by Ross W. Duffin ISBN 978-0-393-06227-4, who talks about the history of tuning. Modern music is based on the current equal temperament (aka distorted, except for the standard A= 440 Hz) system that distorts every single note so that keyboard players (who only have to press a button to play a note) can play in any key and sound half-way decent. But the price paid is that very few know now what a real major third interval is supposed to sound like. Even the so-called "perfect" fourths and fifths were distorted so we can have this convenient system that makes everything equally off, in every key. We fretless-string musicians are not constrained so (are trombone players the same?), we can sound the note exactly as it was meant to sound, despite history and convience, unless we are playing with more inferior instruments ... Yes, even beginning violinists can be such snobs :D
