My mum used to sing this when I was little, I thinkit was a real song by Jim Reeves or someone similar in the 60's or 70's. I was just in a shooting star discussion and realised how much we sang it when I was really little. I don't have my mum any more and would love to know. Can anyone else remmeber it or who it was by please?
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Save it for a rainy day
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Never let it fade away
For love may come and tap you on the shoulder
One moonlit nigh
And just in case you need it when you're older
Your got a pocket full of starlight
pocket full of
pocket full of
pocket full of starlight

Hi! Yes, it was definitely Perry Como. My grandma was a HUGE Perry Como fan and had a bunch of his records. She used to sing this song all the time. We used to ask her to sing it for us! :-) If you go to Target, there is a display of those compilation cds. I think it's one called crooners and it has this song on it. You could probably get Perry Como albums from Amazon.com, too. Thanks for bringing up some great memories! :-)

It's funny how we remember the old ones that we heard when we were kids and they bring back great memories, I think it will be different for our kids, what a shame, it used to be lovely in an afternoon or at the weekend with the old record player in the kitchen and a big pile of records. It was probably mamma's record or one that mum had when she was little.
I will have to go and see if I can find some of the old ones on CD, just so I can play them in my kitchen too.
Thank-you so much for your reply.

From
www.OldieLyrics.com
My dad used to sing this to me when i was little - this brings back lots of happy memorys..
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Never let it fade away
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Save it for a rainy day
For love may come and tap you on the shoulder some starless night
Just in case you feel you want to hold her
You'll have a pocketful of starlight
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Never let it fade away
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Save it for a rainy day
For love may come and tap you on the shoulder some starless night
Just in case you feel you want to hold her
You'll have a pocketful of starlight
(Pocketful of starlight, hm,hm,hm,hm,hm,hm)
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Never let it fade away
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Save it for a rainy day
(Save it for a rainy, save it for a rainy, rainy, rainy, day)
For when your troubles start multiplyin' and they just might
It's easy to forget them without tryin'
With just a pocketful of starlight
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Never let it fade away
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Save it for a rainy day
(Save it for a rainy day)
Save it for a rainy day

Try Perry Como. But it is such a famous song that there may well have been various versions of it. I really love that song. I think that it's really sweet that your mother used to sing it. It's definitely a real song. I love a lot of music from that era even though I wasn't even remotely alive yet (my thought is that the version of the song I am thinking of is from much further back than the 60's, though *laugh*) and a lot of those songs were used in a show called Forever Plaid that i went to many times, so you have brought back a really wonderful memory for me. Thank you! ^_^

I'm glad you got a wonderful memory out of this, I did too when it came back to me.
Thank-you so much I knew it was someone like that, mum used to sing it almost like a lullaby. I kept thinking Jim Reeves sounded wrong, I know it was on an old 12" record she got from mamma's and she did like Perry Como and Elvis and all those guys but this was in the early 70's, I was born 72.
Never heard of Forever Plaid though, but I'm glad you enjoyed it!
We probably have more in commen that I'd realised, you probably know allabout the music I was brought up with.
Wow, thanks again!

I also love all those old songs. I'm not old enough really but who cares and I don't care what people think of me when I tell them that I like a certain song; their problem...lol
My mom taught me to sing all the old songs when I was growing up; she used to be an opera singer. She had a few of those 12" records as well that I used to play all the time.
She even had and gave to me when I was an adult, a whole album full of what they call, 'Gaslight Hits'. Songs like, 'Franky and Johnny were lovers', etc.

Wow, my mum had the Elvis Album from the film with Frankie and Johnny.
It must have been fantastic growing up with a mum who had such a fantastic vocation, I bet you can sing wonderfully too!
I used to listen to all the songs mum bought when she was growing up and some of my mamma's really old songs and I knew then all and loved them.
It's amazing how several of us share these family memories, I'm really glad I started this discussion now. I didn't think anyone would reply.
I feel quite sad for our children now because a lot of todays music isn't the innocent sing-a-long stuff we learned as toddles.

It was actually Perry Como and the song was called "Catch a Falling Star". It was released in the late 1950's from memory because I seem to remember that I was still in primary school at the time. Of course in those days we didn't have television, and this one was played on the radio regularly it seemed.
I used to sing it to my son sometimes when he was a baby, and it sure did beat "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" or at least as far as I was concerned it did make a bit of a change. It was a lovely tune, and even though I am tone deaf, I could recognise it as being soft and suitable for little children. :)

The full lyrics are ...
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Never let it fade away
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Save it for a rainy day
For love may come and tap you on the shoulder some starless night
Just incase you feel you wanna hold her, you?ll have a pocket full of starlight
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Never let it fade away
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Save it for a rainy day
For love may come and tap you on the shoulder some starless night
Just incase you feel you wanna hold her, you?ll have a pocket full of starlight
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Never let it fade away
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Save it for a rainy day
For when your troubles start multiplying
They just might
It?s easy to forget them without trying
With just a pocket full of starlight
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Never let it fade away
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Save it for a rainy day
Save it for a rainy day

Our teacher in grade three taught us that but I never knew the artist of this song. We had an activity concerning that too, we were asked to draw something regarding this song, I think I drew a little girl in a night gown catching a falling star. But when u asked it here I looked it up apparently its Perry Como's song.

Thank-you so much for your kind comment, I don't know why this song suddenly came back to me but I am very pleased it did, I have some lovely memories of doing cooking together in the kitchen in an afternoon, well mum cooking and me trying to get in the way mainly, no wonder she banned me when hot things were around.

I'm so glad you are sharing the sudden reappearance of this old song, how odd it has appeared for 2 of us suddenly out of nowhere.
I haven't thought about it for years then up it pops and makes me feel young happy and hopeful again. I wonder if I can download it onto my profile.
