Does anyone have any advice on potty training a puppy?

We just purchased a 11 week old Shih Tzu puppy. This is our first animal that does not live in a bowl or cage, so basically we are clueless. She is very good. We are trying to crate train her which is going well. She really does enjoy being in there, so that is one problem solved. Our only dilemma is knowing when to take her out. My husband and I are so paranoid that she will go in the house we are taking her out constantly. Anytime she sniffs around we are wisking her outside. I swear the poor thing will never learn to sit on the floor. We have been told to give her about a minute and if nothing happens bring her in. Seems we are always throwing our shoes and coat on. I am sure our neighbors are laughing hysterically at us, but I want to be consistant. Are we being to paranoid?

Cherylk44, Thanks so much for the advice. Your little one is adorable! We just had Tayah groomed again tonight and they put valentine bows in her hair. If I can get a picture I will post it in my photo section.

These puppies are all so cute! :) I'm jealous. My husband said he thought about buying me a dog for Christmas, but that probably wouldn't have been a good idea. We would have had to drive up to his parent's house and leave him or her all alone.. and I shudder to think what that would mean. Our cats wouldn't have liked it much either! LOL It's been years, though, since I've helped potty train a dog. And we didn't use crates at all back then. Inside the house, we always used newspaper, and I don't even recall how effective that was. Sorry I'm not much help. Good luck with your puppy! :)
