One of my New Year's resolutions is to get my reduce my trash to one bag per week by the end of the year. I currently recycle, compost, try not to purchase items I don't really need, and be aware of large packaging for small items. I have a family of 6, and we currently have 6 trash bags per week. How much trash does your family generate, and how do you try to reduce the amount?

What a great resolution. We generate roughly one bag per week, depending on what is going on (if we buy boxed items, ect). We recycle as much as we can as well as buy items that don't over do it on the packaging. One thing that helped us was switching to flushable cat litter. The litter lasts longer and you don't have to accumulate more trash by having to throw it out.

I just stumbled upon this post and I LOVE YOUR RESOLUTION! I would so love to be able to recycle, but alas, there is no recycling in my small, backward town. It kills me to throw away glass and newspapers and plastic when I know that they are recyclable. The biggest thing I do to reduce trash, and you already eluded to it, is to not buy things that are already packaged into small sizes. I buy a large bag of chips and place a handful in a tupper container for my children's lunches! I put their sandwich in a tupper container. I won't use baggies! I use a thermos for their liquids rather than buying the juice packs and other pre packaged liquids.

We create a lot fo trash. There's seven of us here. My kids usually have friends here. You wouldn't think they would make a big difference in the amount of trash but they do.
On average I would say we have 6 or more bags of trash per week. We do recycle our bottles, cans, plastics and newspapers. I finally got my recycling bins. It was a real issue for a long time.

In our household we recycle , and we composte but we still go through a couple of bags a week . I think the more you are in a family the more trash you are likely to have . There are seven of us in my household and sometimes no matter how much you try to cut back on the amount you have is going to be much harder then if you were a family of three or four .
