I have seen a number of Indians who suddenly start communication to a foreigner in a heavy accent as if he / she has been born and brought up in a country other than India. Why do people pretend and act like this. Are they trying to impress them or making a laughing stock of themselves. I have always wondered why ? I have never come across any foreigners who picks up an Indian accent and communicates with us when we visit abroad unless he wants to make a mockery out of it. Why do most of us Indians act like this.

i have an accent. i have quite a few actually.
im better than a few 'foreigners' as far as english is concerned. they say so themselves. believe me.
so i don't really relate to your query.
but yes, a lot of people are complexed. hence the attempt to accentuate. what they fail to realize is that they need to grasp the language before they decide to modify it. an accent is nothing but that. the stress on words changes.
it's done with other languages as well.
i don't see why people fuss over it though.
i mean, be cool. im improving on my hindi significantly right now. and enjoying it. it's an incredible language, and has various dialects.
but people in india don't notice that.... why? i fail to see.
but yeah, people should just be themselves.
and for heaven's sake don't get complexed.

You have a point. You might be one of those who actually are good. But have you never come across that community of people who on the drop of a hat try to impress themselves to foreigners and make a fool of themselves. Its so artificial that it sucks.

i agree, they make a fool of themselves, but it does not irritate me. i just feel a little bad for them. they seem low on confidence to me, that's all.
