In my city, San Diego, California the city has been taking family owned businesses at a alarming rate in the name of Imminent Domain. Some of these businesses have been in business as long as 40 years, and are being passed down from generation to generation. In their place Corporate America is building condominiums, hotels and parking garages. What is your thoughts on Imminent Domain?

Eminent domain should only be used when absolutely necessary--and make sure that it is and that the price paid for it is fair with as little destruction as possible. That is, if you can bring a new highway through by either taking land or taking a house, take the land. And necessary highway building and the like is the only reason it should ever be used. People shouldn't be forced to relocate by business people with more clout. What if a burglar came into your house and stole a stereo system from you--but paid you for it? Could be that your stereo system has sentimental value to you--like it might have been a gift from a relative who had just passed away? But the burglar tells you that he's paying you "fair market price" for it and that he's taking it whether or not you object. Bet you'd still call the cops on him. Unfortunately, we can't call the cops on those corporate business people like the ones you've mentioned. However, we can keep talking about the unfairness of it and hope that things will begin to change.
