Why can't people stop their bad habits?

Have you ever noticed somebody with a bad habit (ie gambling addiction, alcoholism, drug addiction, even laziness) and wonder to yourself why it's so hard for them to stop doing what they are doing?
Do you tend to wonder "what are they thinking? can't they see what it's doing to them?"

People aren't addicted to these things specifically, they are addicted to the dopamine rush when doing these activities and this dopamine is what they are ultimately addicted too. Yes, some people are weak (I gave up smoking cold-turkey on the first try) but others are just overwhelmed by the signals and chemicals in their brain.
