Spirit Guides, higher self

I have fairly read books on the topic; "channeling," and more specifically "how to connect with the guide" however, i wasn't able to actually connect with the high level guides. And I don't know if I'm progressing too. So, please anyone in the community share with me your experiences. Thank you!

Your spirit guides are in constant contact with you. It's up to you to learn how to 'tune in' to their frequency. The problem is that we have become too dependant on our five senses. You hear them but not with your ears. You see them, but not with your eyes. It's rather like trying to see the image in those 3-D 'hidden' image illusions pictures from a few years ago. It's impossible to see unless you 'unfocus' your eyes. Then once you become 'aware' of the hidden image, it pops out at you, and you have no problem seeing it.
I had a hard time finding my spirit guide, thinking I was looking for Mother Mary, or maybe the ArchAngel Michael. I was rather shocked to find that my spirit guide is White Buffalo Calf Woman.

Yes, of course I agree, however, there are some common experiences and processes that govern this kind of phenomenon and as I vision it, we could sense some patterns that could and might be useful for us new to this kind of higher connection. So I am now up to detect some patters to help us at least in the early process. Like what are some common problems when starting and how to handle it..., of course how to maintain the connection and importantly how to discern if we are connecting to a higher guide or to a less evolved one. Anyway, thanks for the useful response and I deeply appreciate it.
