Doctor's negligence or Mother's mistake?

One night, a baby was very sick. So, his mother brought him to the hospital. The doctor checked the baby, checked the blood, blood pressure, everything, and then said that it was just a flu. The doctor gave the baby medicines to recover. After that, the mother and her baby went home. The next night, the baby was still sick but this time it was worse. So, the mother decided to bring the baby to another nearby hospital. Another doctor checked the baby. And then said that the baby was diagnosed to have "Dengue"(a disease that is caused by a mosquito bite). The doctor said that the condition of the baby is very crucial. The baby is on the last stage of Dengue. The mother was so shocked. She said that they must be wrong because the first doctor who checked the baby said that it was just a flu. She showed them the result of the first test. The doctor said that they can not be wrong and they are sure that the baby has Dengue. After a few hours, the baby died. The mother cried and cried for her baby. The doctor said to the mother, if she was able to bring her baby 1 day earlier, there might have been a chance for the baby to survive. Until now, the mother is still blaming herself for not taking good care of her baby. And, the FIRST DOCTOR to check the baby is still trying to cure other patients. Who is really wrong in this incident?..

I don't think either one really is. If the doctor took the tests and they came back that the baby had the flu there wasn't much else he could do. The mother went by what the first doctor had said because of the testt results and she went on faith. I don't see the wrong with either one.

possibly noone isat fault, but certainly not themother. If the first doctor had never seen an infant with dengue fever, he wouldn't know what the symptoms were in an infant, and would diagnose from the symptoms he saw. There is a sayingthat fits "if it looks like a chicken, walks like a chicken and clucks like a chicken its probably a chicken" if all the symptoms point to influenza, its usually influenza.

I think this is defenotely doctor negligence. the mother should not blme herself. with time it will get easier for her to go on and live her life. that first doctor should be ashamed of himself because he has the blood of that baby on his havnds...how could he misdiagnos it? Itis his fault!

I think its no ones fault because dengue is rare and its symptoms is same as it is of a common flu so I don't think anyone should be blame instead we should try to convince that mother now that her child is now in a better place where he will live happily for eternity.

i heard of that news and they are doing legal acts for the doctor that first checked the baby. That doctor is very much liable since its a very negligence on his part. The mother do her reponsibility as she brought her baby but if the doctor did his job well then the baby must be save. well the damage has been done and the only thing the mother could do is to learn from that experience with the expense of her baby's life. and for us to also learn that we should make sure that result are right whenever we consult a doctor. if we doubt then consult another one and we should take care not only for the babies but all of the family to Dengue. Its very dangerous.

I have to say this is the doctors mistake. The mother did the right thing by taking the child to the hospital. I'm a mother of two and you would not take your child to the hospital for just the flu, she must have felt it was something more. I have been treated by a negligent doctor and I'm still paying the price for her mistake 8 years later. I've had multiple surgeries and almost lost the ability to have more children. So I have absolutly no sympathy for a doctor who is negligent. It should be mandatory for doctors to go to continuing education and like any professional should be constantly reading about new findings and new illnesses so they are always at the top of their game.

No one is actually wrong. Medicine is an art, not a science, and apparently the first doctor didn't actually look at the blood tests or had no clue what the sypmtoms for dengue fever were. If he had never seen the disease he would have no clue what to watch for. The mother is not at fault because she isn't trained to diagnose disease. There are many situations where no one is at fault, contrary to popular belief, but people are actually encouraged in many ways , to place blame. You see this all the time with unavoidable accidents or peole who overdose on medications, and then those who feel upset find a way to sue or to prosecute those who happened to be the survivor or manufacturer involved in some process that led up to the accident or event.

I would say if anyone is at fault, it is the first doctor. The mother expects the doctor to make the correct diagnosis, regardless of which doctor she chooses to ask. There's no way she could know which doctor is going to give her the correct information. Medical help should not be a crap shoot. The mother did all she could, and should be commended for the thought of consulting another physician when her child did not get better.

i cannot say it was the mother's fault neither the first doctor, because we weren't really sure of the situation if how long was the baby sick before she went to the first doctor. but if it were already 3 days, the doctor should have given complete blood exam for the baby. if just for the blood pressure, it won't show...it should be a complete blood test...

I don't think it was any ones fault. But she could ask for both sets of test results and take them to her Dr. and ask what was differant from the test the first took that the Dr. didn'tknow.

The first doctor, really the mother did the right thing and she even took the baby to the hospital the second time and it was the very next day. Really she did all she could and I can't believe that the first doctor hadn't discovered the problem if he did the blood work and everything. I would sue the first doctor, she has the suppose test results. It is horrible that she blames herself when really I don't think there was much more she could do about it.

That first doctor is wrong. That first doctor should not be a doctor because he or she did not do their job. The mother is not in the wrong. By the way, I am sorry for her loss, I know what it is like and it is never a good thing to lose your blood. I lost my brother five months ago and I am still a bit of a mess from it. I want to let it go, but I cannot at times. It is never easy.

one word- MALPRACTICE. doctors are pushed for time and resources, they see too many patients a day and one case may seem to run into the other....it's not the mother fault, she took the child to someone she thought would help. SUE the first hospital!!!!

This makes me very, very sad. The Mother did everything right. She brought her baby to the Dr. because something was wrong & she relied on the Dr. to figure out what it was. She took care of her baby in every sense of the word. & Of course she would blame herself, every Mother would. You'd be asking yourself, "What if?," constantly. We as patients go to our Doctors for them to help us figure out what is wrong & no.. they can't know everything--but, they go off of the symptoms we give to them for ourselves & our children. Some diseases or whatever may double up in symptoms, but it's their job to figure it out. I'm sure this mother took the Dr.'s word for it & trusted him--. I'm just so sad for her and the baby she lost. I know myself.. that I RESEARCH everything because I'm like that. I have so many medical books/ baby books and then of course I use the on-line medical search engines & I think a lot more people are going to need to be forward with their Doctors when they bring anyone in for sicknesses because Dr.'s aren't seeing everything we are seeing or experiencing what we are.. so we need to be the ones that step forward and give ideas of what it could be. I know that no matter how much I trust my Dr. and respect him.. if he gives me a diagnosis for something- I will go and do my own research and cross examine things with different symptoms and bring it in to him and say--- now, could it be this?? So, in this situation it's hard to say who is wrong, it's easy to place the blame on the first Dr. that misdiagnosed the disease-- but, I know it's NOT the mother's fault and I hope she doesn't blame herself anymore.
