I was in Walmart this week. In fact I'm in Walmart every week. They had a sign at the door explaining why they are doing away with lay-away. It says because the prices are so low, they feel most people can afford to buy the item now and not use lay-away. It went on to say that by not offering lay-away any more, they could keep there prices down. Again making it possible to buy the item now. If they are decreasing the size of their fabric department, you can be pretty sure sales in this area are down. You can't make money if people don't want it.

I use to work at Wal-Mart and in the layaway dept. Where I come from everyone has 2 or 3 kids at least and they have to put the school clothes and school supplies on layaway and pay it out a little at a time. Where I come from we don't have high paying jobs. I talked to the lady that used to work there and she says that she thinks it is hurting the sales. Another thing is now that wal-mart has gotten rid of the layaway they are really pushing their credit card. I think this was the whole idea behind getting rid of layaway.

oh yea they have really low prices suuure well i dont know about most of yall but we are on a tight budget, well with 4 kids you gotta be ya know ;) any who now that layaway is gone our shoe dept is right wher the layaway used to be and me and the girls "window" shop and somtimes we find somithing we like and then its the whole argument of oh gee i wish ... so i will say loudly so that they can hear in the back that well IF THEY STILL HAD LAYAWAY , lol yea they would make alot more money off me if they had layaway , geez i once saw a woman put 200$ worth of yarn in layaway , and this was just for 1 project :O , im hoping they will see the error of their ways next yr at least thats what i have heard thru the grapevine, as for the credit card thing well I got one of those but like its been said before we dont need another bill ya know ;) I only use it when im out of town and dont have the cash , i think i have only used my walmart card for gas since they have cut out layaway ...... sure wish we had another dept store in this town , i think thats the prob here they KNOW that this is the only place for us to shop unless we want to drive an hour away to get to target , hobby lobby etc , there was rumors of a target coming but that was like 2 yrs ago and we are still waiting .....

I totally agree with you. I think it is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Thankfully I have 2 other places to purchase craft items but not the cheap fabric. I use a lot of the $1/yr fabric. Also I used to live in a small town and there was a senior citizen's bus that always brought the little ladies in to shop and they are always buying fabric to make quilts if they take it out of this store it will devestate them because this is all they have to do and I don't know if the bus will take them to the larger town up the road.

I have hear that too that walmart is getting rid of there fabric section. I am not sure but a new Walmart opened up and they have a really small fabric section and they said it would be gone by the end of the year. My wife loves to get fabric from there. I never really asked them why they are getting rid of that section but I will the next time I am in.

NOOO... Wal-Mart can't do away with their craft section :( :( That's the closest store to me where I get what I need to do my homemade projects. Otherwise I will have to drive 50 miles to Micheals in Elizabethtown. This makes me sad :( What's next they hike up the prices on everything. GRRR

Where I live I am 40+ miles away from a Walmart, Michaels Joanns, or Ben Franklin. I used Walmart for layaway--have 3 kids and a hubby who goes through LOTS of jeans in a year. Can't afford to buy clothes for everyone all at one time. Really upset me doing away with layaway. My youngest, who just turned a year in Jan was in her bassinett until the fall. We went to Walmart to put her crib and mattress on layaway only to find out that they were doing away with layaway and that if we put it on layaway we would have to get it out by early December. No way could I afford almost $300 at one time for the crib and mattress. One of the cities close to me has 2 Walmart Super Centers--the oldest one still has fabric but have heard that its going to be taken out and they have been downsizing that craft department for almost 2 years. Every time I go in, more is gone. The newer Walmart has NO fabric, very little yarn and only odds and end of other crafts...2 aisles total if that. There is a Michaels, Ben Franklin and Joannes there also but hey lets face it, when you are a mom and have your kids with you (as most of us do), you want to make one trip to a store and get everything you want in once place...you don't want to keep dragging everyone in and out of the vehicle. I think Walmart is loosing money big time and as for their credit card, forget it. I dont' want yet another bill to pay for each month. Without Walmarts carring craft supplies, I will be forced to order online (as the other stores don't carry everything I want or use or need) or drive 100+ miles into another state to go to an AC Moore. What a pain...I always say if it aint' broke, don't fix it and things were working well for Walmart...why change a good thing?

I was in wal-mart the other day to purchase some cross stitch thread and they don't even carry cross stitch materials any more. I am sooooo tired of this. The only place I can get it now is hobby lobby and hancocks but they are not as cheap as walmart was.

Wow. That really bites. There is literally no where else to get fabric in my town. The closest place to obtain fabric if wal-mart stops selling it will be three hours away! I so dislike Wal-Mart and hate like the dickens that I am forced to shop there due to lack of other stores in my area.

I noticed that K-mart, Walmart and a few other stores around me got rid of it. Well, I normally don't use it, but I think other people do. I believe they got rid of it due to the issues of cost, moreover most people have credit cards or have the money so they are able to purchase it now. However, it does become annoying if you don't have a credit card and cannot afford to pay for it now, or if you are buying a lot of gifts for a holiday. Pablo

I think that is the Wal-Mart way. Move in chase all of the other stores out of business. Then downsize. That is what they do. Wal-Mart is out to get money and they don't care about me, you or anyone else. That is the Wal-Mart way. Where I live they have moved 3 times. Leaving these huge abandoned buildings behind making the area look like a run down factory section. Their only concern is money. However you do have the internet which gives you access to better quality as well as variety than Wal-Mart will ever provide you. What will Wal-Mart do next? Buy the internet & charge you a nickel to long on to each page.

They just opened a new Superstore here last month and I was there on opening day. There was about 6 or 7 of us gathered near the aisle where the crafts were moved to and we were ready to start a riot when we found out the fabrics were gone. The employee that came over there said something at the time about precuts coming too but now a month later they say they won't be getting those either now. That leaves Joann Fabrics and Hobby Lobby for fabrics and they are way more expensive than Walmart ever was. :( Now when I walk down the aisle I might as well be going down the crafts aisle at Meijer.

I forgot to add that Walmart has also gotten rid of the pets. No more fish, birds or hamsters. They still carry the food supplies for all of them but no more animals. My 7 yr. old daughter was sure disappointed when she found that out. She loved going past the fish tanks and looking at all of them everytime we went there. :(

yea i hate the pet thing :( there are a few walmarts we know that still carry fish but not many , lol that reminds me i needto go and get some soon actually well i havent been to that walmart in awile so it may be a busted trip but ya get my drift ,do you have a petsco near ya ?? I just went there for the 1st time last week and was totally wowed LOL see i had went there on a wim to check out their birds cause my sons parakeet got eaten by the cats a few weeks ago :( so i felt i had to make it up to him ( since they were my cats after all) any who i had been told that there was a breed of keets called spangle and saw them online and really wanted one but since they were considered rare it was kinda iffy that we would ever get one , soo any who long story short , i went to petco ( since it was next to hobby lobby ) and they actually had 1 just 1 spangle keet !! I swear i almost fainted and better yet they were on sale with the petco card too ;) so there was a unexpected purchase that day LOL but he was worth it ! ya should have seen the look on my sons face :) he was happy bout the new bird then when i told him that it was named after us he was even more proud LOL but if ya wanna see pets at walmart or at least fish the closest one in our area is in the next small town bout 30 min away , but thrers nothing really there in that town so its usually a stop thru we make on the way back from my doc appts , ironicly its these small walmarts that have the best craft sections ... go figure ~M~ * sorry for the ramble;) *

Yes I was talking to a cashier a few weeks ago and they mentioned that the craft department was going to be leaving. I couldn't believe it, but then again I worked for a couple years I know how they like to do things up the .......anyways so now we will all be forced to shop at the high priced craft stores to get what we used to get at walmart. I don't consider this a great move on their part, but if they are trying to scare away customer then they are doing a great job.
