Want to move to a warmer climate in the USA. Have any suggestions?

We live in Michigan, which does get some brutally cold winters. Although this winter has been relatively mild, most are freezing!!! When I retire, I'd like to move to a warmer place (due to back surgery the cold makes me miserable). I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to a good place to move, that's near water (for boating) and that has relatively decent temps all year? I realize everywhere has a downfall, but we're at a loss as to where to go. Basically, I think my soon to be retired Man (lol) has been talking about places all over the USA!! Thanks for your ideas!! :-)

we live in redding, california, a small, warm place. it's near chico, the one fiveisallofus was telling you above. i agree that chico is better if you prefer a place cooler and bigger. it gets cold here in redding too but it seldom snows. it's just that summers here are too hot. we got the heatwave last year which made my husband and i think of moving to oregon. what we like with redding is it's quiet, traffic is very tolerable, and it's near lassen, burney falls, mt.shasta, and some other tourist destinations. mt. shasta is a very beautiful place, but i know it's not what you're looking for coz it's snowy like where you live. check redding sometime :)

California! I have lived here all my lifa But northern california is the best! Chico...research Chico. It is awesome. Very green. full of trees. In the winter it gets to about 50 degrees and summers are very warm. I live about 30 minutes from there. But the majority of my life was in Chico. Not to big, but not to small! We have a nice lakes all around. Check it out!!

Thanks so much for your reply! I was in southern california about 30 years ago (wow, I can't believe it's been that long!) but the one thing I remember the most about that area (Laguna Beach) was that it was smoggy until about noon, and then the sun came out. I imagine that northern california is different. It's a beautiful state for sure, but I never got the opportunity to see the northern part. I'll definately have to put that on the list! Thanks again!! :-)

I was born in raised in Florida!!! :) As I was growing up, I always wondered why so many people would move down to Florida when they retired. I grew up hearing the Florida is the retirement state. And I guess in some ways it is still true. Although I have recently moved to Oklahoma, I still hear about how more and more people are moving to Florida because they love the weather. Just the other weekend, we were having an ice storm and my mother called and told me that their temp was 70 degrees! Wow! Talk about a huge difference! Rarely, Flroida will get freezes. But be rest assured, they do not last long!!! I didn't see snow for the first time until I married and moved to a northern state. But now I love it!!! I wish I could live in a state that does get more snow! I have some siblings that live in Michigan. We share the same father but not the same mother, so I didn't grow up with them. But they live not too far from the lake there in the thumb of Michigan. So, they get the lake effect snow all the time and are sick of it. ha ha Not me! I would love to have the much snow. Unfortunately, my partner does not agree. So, I guess I will have to leave him if I want to live more north. ha ha One day....I will get to see Alaska! A girl can dream, right? :)

Being born and raised in Michigan with more snow then I ever care to remember seeing, I can't imagine someone wanting to move where there is snow all the time! I'm actually starting to really hate the snow, and this has been a mild winter! Florida seems to win out on the responses of a warm place to live, but I do fear those hurricanes! Maybe one day you can live in Alaska, but there's no need to go that far, we have as much snow here in Michigan as Alaska does!! Personally, I'm dreaming of living in a warmer state! I love your replies, they are long and informative! Thanks for your reply!! :-)

The best place I have lived in the US is Pensacola Florida. It is nice weather with some chilly winter days. Only about 2 weeks total of cold. You do not even feel like you are in Florida so much. It is even referred to as lower Alabama. LOL So you get the perks of the state but you are living in a rural area. I LOVED it and plan to move back there when I retire. I am presently in Northern MS and it gets a LOT colder here than Florida.

Thanks so much for your response!! I have heard of Pensacola before, but never really knew of the exact location..lol I found the Pensacola chamber of commerce website, and it looks like an absolutely beautiful place to be!! I really love the Pensacola beach pier (I can only imagine the pics I can take there) and the beauty of the beach itself with the gorgeous blue waters. They also had an average monthly temp. on the site, and it sounds right up our alley! We're definately going to put this on the list of "places to travel to and possibly live"...lol I can also relate to the "a LOT colder" thought....brrrrr! Thanks Again!! :-)

I'm in Tallahassee, Florida and it has a lot to recommend it. It can drop below freezing during the very short winter month, but that's usually at night and then it will be 80 the next day. We also have a slight pollen problem here. Almost everyone has sinus problems. Knock on wood, I haven't gotten that yet. Pensacola is beautiful, too. You would be closer to the water there but after the hurricane that hit it, I definitely feel a little safer in Tallahassee. It's about an hour to the coast from here although there are some lakes just outside the city. If you move here, make sure you let me know --- I'll show you where the best grocery stores are. Ha, ha.

Thanks so much for your reply!! The Florida hurricanes do concern me, so that would solve my problem! As for the grocery stores, I'd rather have you show me the best restaurants!! I will definately let you know if we land in Florida! :-)
