No woman no cry
-Bob Marley
No, woman, no cry;
No, woman, no cry;
No, woman, no cry;
No, woman, no cry.
Said - said - said: I remember when we used to sit
In the government yard in trenchtown,
Oba - obaserving the ypocrites
As they would mingle with the good people we meet.
Good friends we have, oh, good friends weve lost
Along the way.
In this great future, you cant forget your past;
So dry your tears, I seh.
No, woman, no cry;
No, woman, no cry.
ere, little darlin, dont shed no tears:
No, woman, no cry.
Said - said - said: I remember when-a we used to sit
In the government yard in trenchtown.
And then georgie would make the fire lights,
As it was logwood burnin through the nights.
Then we would cook cornmeal porridge,
Of which Ill share with you;
My feet is my only carriage,
So Ive got to push on through.
But while Im gone, I mean:
Everythings gonna be all right!
Everythings gonna be all right!
Everythings gonna be all right!
Everythings gonna be all right!
I said, everythings gonna be all right-a!
Everythings gonna be all right!
Everythings gonna be all right, now!
Everythings gonna be all right!
So, woman, no cry;
No - no, woman - woman, no cry.
Woman, little sister, dont shed no tears;
No, woman, no cry.
I remember when we used to sit
In the government yard in trenchtown.
And then georgie would make the fire lights,
As it was logwood burnin through the nights.
Then we would cook cornmeal porridge,
Of which Ill share with you;
My feet is my only carriage,
So Ive got to push on through.
But while Im gone:
No, woman, no cry;
No, woman, no cry.
Woman, little darlin, say dont shed no tears;
No, woman, no cry.
Eh! (little darlin, dont shed no tears!
No, woman, no cry.
Little sister, dont shed no tears!
No, woman, no cry.)

I think Bob Marley means, No, sister, don't cry. At first I thought of is as anti-woman song or something. But looking at the lyrics as you typed it very accurately I now have a different idea. It doesn't really mean that if there's no woman there will be no reason to cry for. The lyrics is a bit tricky. Bob Marley was addressing to her sister as "woman" instead of calling her by name. The song then is an encouragement for her sister to be tough through difficult times.

Many people thought as you did. His message was that of encouragement; that all woman can make it through whatever struggle they face. He was just supporting her through the hardship and giving her reason to keep on living.

I'm a great fan of Bob Marley's music and this is one of his best. I never tire of hearing it and it is truly inspirational when you understand the lyrics. I was aware that he wrote this for his sister but I like to think he wrote it for all womankind. God rest his soul, he gave us some beautiful music to remember him by :)
