I went to go and get my best friend yesturday and i was sick. After i was done grocery shopping and we got back in the car i was short of breath and i could not stop talking. Well, thanks to her i finally went to go and see the doctor. He told me that u have severe asthma which is why my simple chest infection is giving me such a hard time. I am a smoker and he told me that if i smoke much longer then i won';t be around to talk about. He also told me that asthma can be compared to the wind. That it could be a nice and gentle warm breeze or it can be a violently aggresive gust of wind. Do you have asthma?? How do you or someone you know cope??

With the grace of God, no, I don't have an astma. Although my brother and my mom have. I'm thankful to God with this.

Thankfully god has taken care of you with this. I have a feeling though that God is warning me about smoking and pushing me to quit to improve my health!!!

i used to have asthma when i was a kid but as i grow up, my asthma was gone... i still remember everytime i had an asthma attack, my mother would rush me to the pediatrician or hospital to be nebulize... my brothers also have asthma, so my mom later decided to buy a nebulizer for home use...

I was actually told when i was 16 that i had a slight case of asthma . I never really payed it much mind though it never bothered me then. My smoking has really turned into something fierce though so i need to kick this habit before it kicks me.

My brother has asthma too. He's having it since he was a baby and the doctor has given some restriction of his diet. He can't eat oranges, watermelon and honeydew in large quantities. If he does, his asthma will attack. Apart from that he must avoid sleeping under a running fan or going outside in chill weather without proper clothing. Fortunately he;s not smoking so the asthma didn't get worse. He doesn't have to use the pump and I am grateful for that.

I am also grateful for this and i am glad that your brother is a non smoker. I had no idea though that oranges, watermelon and honeydew could trigger an asthma attack though that is good to know!!!

I dont have asthma..but I know the sufferings of the person who has it..because my mum is an asthmatic. Follow these golden rules... 1. Dont expose yourself to allergens like dust etc etc.. 2. Any infections like cough, start treating immediately. 3. During acute attacks, slight head end elevation will help you/ make you feel better ! 4. Get an opinion from the consultant Pulmonologist and follow his advise and have a monthly periodical check ups..okay ? 5. Try to carry the medications .nowadays inhalers have become the rule of the day ! ) where ever you go and take it at the start of the acute attact ! because once the asthma starts , it will be difficult to control..early medications better ! Dont loose your heart.. have some courage ! best wishes !

My son & I both have asthma, my son's is worse than mine, he has to have an albuterol inhaler on him 24/7 & he can not be really active, which is really hard on a 5 yr old. Step 1 get rid of all the mini-blinds in your house, they collect dust & alergins which trigger attacks, no matter how often you dust them. Since my son's pediatrician told us to do that we have cut down on attacks over 70%. Second- get rid off all what nots & such that collect dust third- get a cool mist humidifier for your home & leave it on 24/7 Also use Febreeze Allergin Reducer & spray your home with it atleast every other day, keep your vaccuum cleaned so it is not blowing dust into the air, & use swiffers to dust your home, the swiffer dry clothes instead of a rag work great & put less dust back into the air. Ihope these work for you as they have for us. Good Luck

There is really not much that u can do. make sure you stay away from things that can make u sick - cats are a big problem. Try to quit smoking and also try to excersise alot.

Hey ronita34 :D I don't have asthma but I responded to this discussion b/c I work on the phone & sometimes I can't catch my breath (like when a person is nervous) I used to buy bronchilators @ the convienence stores but since the FDA banned ephedrine I can't get them anymore. Long story short I was wondering based on the experience you just had w/ a dr if a dr heard the reason why I wanted a rx brochilator do you think he would give it to me? I don't feel like I have asthma. +'s 4 U :)

I have had asthma since I was about 25 years old; before that I always had problems with allergies and hay fever, but never had asthma a a kid. I smoked for many years, but have now quit for about 5 years. I no longer need the inhalers daily. In fact, I haven't used it at all in quite some time. When I was smoking, I got really sick every time I got a simple chest cold. It got to the point where I knew that I had no choice but to quit smoking. Please give quitting some serious thought, before you have more serious and permanent consequences. There are many medications to treat your asthma, but smoking is probably the major thing aggravating and triggering it. There are a lot of resources on the Internet to help you to quit smoking. There is a fine line between asthma and other chronic and permanent lung diseases, such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema. You don't want to cross that line! Good Luck, and I hope you feel better soon!

I don't have asthma but my husband does. He went into the Marine's and they found out while he was in there that he had it. He has to carry an inhaler with him. Sometimes it just flares up and he'll have to use the inhaler and the rest of the time he's fine. His isn't as severe as some people's though.

I have an asthma since I was in college, its exactly 10 years now. But what I have is not that severe, I use nevolizer and take ventolin for medicine. If I feel I will have an attack I drink my medicine right away and a fresh milk or sterelize milk. Fresh milk or sterelize milk really helps a lot especially if you feel your having a hard time to breath. Its not that hard to cope with it, you just need to be extra careful in your activities and avoid polluted places. I hope you could stop your smoking because it can trigger the attack.

I had athma as a baby then I outgrew it. Now it is back. It has been back for over 10 years. I have had Pneumonia 3 times last winter and it was really hard. I carry an inhaler all the time. I use an inhaler 2 times a day and take singular. I also get solumedrol treatments for my athma. I cant be around people smoking because i cant breath. Even the smoke on someones clothes will triger an attack with me. I was in an elevator last week and a couple got in that obviously just been smoking. I had to use my emergency inhaler and I got off the next time the elevater stopped. People dont know what they do to others when they have athma

I have asthma ,it is called smoking induced asthma . My doctor said if I had never smoked I would never have got this . It only affects me when I get the flu ,and then I will cough until I get sick if I lay down . I have a puffer for it but don't need to use it a lot . Once in a blue moon if I am around someone who has a lot of pets of if the weather is muggy it will affect me more but on the most part it doesn't affect me unless I get the flu .My husband has severe asthma and has to carry his puffer with him everywhere he goes . My children have it also but it only affects them when they get the flu also . The place we are renting had a lot of mold it it this summer and the doctor said that is what gave it to the children .

my little nieces have it. my sister and her husband use to smoke all the time and their doctor told them thats what caused their kids to have it. they quit smoking and they seemed to have cleared up some what. they have to use an inhaler of and on. i myself dont think i have it. but i could cause i can get short winded after playing with the kids and i know i need to quit smoking but everything i have tried failed. i wished i would have never started. its not a habit you can just up and quit. or at least i cant

I developed asthma due to allergies. I live with a cat, and am allergic to him and I recently developed asthma. He'll be our last cat, that's for sure. My asthma is mostly sports induced, as it bugs me when I am working out, so I use a rescue inhaler when I am playing sports or at the gym. I don't smoke, and thankfully live someplace where smoking is banned from restaurants and bars, so I can easily avoid that. Once the cat passes (or at least the weather warms up and he can go back outside) it'll be easier for me to cope and it might actually go away once I am no longer around the cat.
