I chose my religion myself. My parents are of two different faiths, and religion was never a big deal in my household. I was never really brought up as anything particular. Both my folks explained their beliefs to me but they always made it clear that I could follow whatever religious path I felt comfortable with. I did a lot of reading and a lot of soul searching until I found what I felt was right for me.

I chose my religion. I was exposed to more than one religion as a child within my family. The religion I chose is the one followed by my great-grandparents, who were kind to me when no one else was. So I'll admit that likely affected my choice.
Later on, a part of me wanted to convert to the religion that is more widely practiced where I am, but I just couldn't do it. It felt like a personal betrayal of my gods to do so. I've had friends of many religions, and I love to learn about other people's beliefs, but I don't think mine could ever change now.

It is said that all children are born atheists. That is, they don't know of any religion so they do not believe in one. Until someone teaches them about the religion, they have no knowledge pertaining to it...
As for your question of if it is choice or not... I know a number of people who do not follow the same religions that they were raised with.

Of course when you are younger-- your parents have picked the religion for you because it is what they are & you follow it and practice it just like them. Now, that I am older-- I still love the religion they chose for me: Catholic. I am very happy I am in this religion. It's never been an option for me to switch because I know the other religions & am very happy with mine. So, yes it is my own choice to follow the religion that I do.. because it interets me & I feel is the best religion for me.
