Bad Teacher or Bad Student?

I have a problem in school. My physics teacher isn't really good at teaching a class in my opinion. He starts to talk about a subject in physics then leads to talking about something that has nothing to do with physics which ends up lasting till the end of class. So in one class with him I'll end up learning about the deifinition of inertia and nothing else. So if I fail my next test will it make him a bad teacher? I'm afraid I might be a bad student since I don't really try to teach myself. I'm going to start doing that today so I won't fail. But do you think my teacher is bad at his job or would I be a bad student for not trying to get the info myself?

I think this problem occurs with a lot of people. There are many teachers who although know many things and have an abundance of knowledge couldn't transfer to the students. They can't teach the way that student can pick. As a result, whatever they say doesn't reach your mind. You keep trying to grab but that doesn't reach you. I guess teachers should concentrate and they should try to be more discriptive and they should use easier words and keep the level low so that all students can catch that and understand.

I had a professor in college who did that often- He would go off on a rampage and then say "I digress" I hated the class.. I spent most of my time there doing homework for other classes- not paying attention and messing around. It was my first B in college.. It stunk! So was I a bad student? YES--- because I could have read the book and learned what I needed to learn to do better. Was he a bad teacher-- Heck yes! A terrible one.. the one thing I learned was to never take another class from this professor again. I know high school isn't like that- you take them with who teaches them. Maybe you and some classmates can get together and try to study together so that you leanr the required info.. Physics is hard and believe me its harder in college.. so get it now.

It sounds to me as if he is a bad teacher (though he may be a very pleasant person!) I think you should be cunning. Ask to speak to him after class and say that there are some topics that you need to understand better. If he gives you some time then, he is, perhaps, a little less bad! Ask if you can see the detailed syllabus so that you know what has got to be learned by when. He should have an outline teaching plan for the whole course, though it may be in his head! If you are within a year of your final exams, ask to see some previous exam papers, so that you become familiar with the questions and the topics. You sound to me to be a good student who is having to put more work into your course than you should need to, though, of course, a teacher is there as a guide and mentor, not to feed you knowledge. The real job of a teacher is to help students to think for themselves and make connections and learn techniques of acquiring knowledge. It may be that this is what his apparently irrelevant stories are intended to do.

Although I do not know your teacher, I know that some teachers just do not have the ability to teach. On the other hand, however, I also know of several wonderful teachers that had several students failing in their classes because the students would not take the time to study or skim through their textbooks before coming to the classroom, a habit that incidentally makes studying and learning much more easier - Skimming through your textbook before coming to the classroom often prepares one for the lesson and against any possible unfamiliar terms or ideas.

look now a days the teaching has reached a complete two dimension. in one dimension they teach you to the maximum of their knowledge and the other dimension will be that they want you to study rather than just getting fed by the teacher. you can't simply blame a teacher for not completing his or her responsibility, it your duty too to understand his or her content. better try to look for his or her knowledge rather than complaining on his way of teaching.

I can understand your problem that your teacher were mistaken about the switch over the subject while she is teaching' it may be her teaching style has been bending' actually she dont know that how to take the subject among the student' but one thing agree that teacher has been learning stage' may be she is quitely new to the school' she had first experience with you all... what my point is both are good' every one have to understand themselves' thenonly mainatain a good relationship with the teacher and the student.... What do you say?

yea that happens some times you just have to talk to the teachers about that problem and if you think your a bad student just ask the teacher for help during lunch time or something

i had a few teachers in HS that were kind of like that. in my mind, they weren't bad teachers, sometimes they digress and talk about other things, but as long as you remember what they taught..it shouldn't be a problem. you can go on and learn on your own, but i don't think either of you are bad.

I don't in any way consider you a bad student. Your teacher sounds like he needs a refresher course on how to teach a class properly. *laugh* Seriously, there really are bad teachers out there who just can't get their point across properly. I've heard of a few in my time, although I thankfully wasn't the victim of any such truly bad teaching. I guess that all you can really do in your case is what you are already planning to do - try to teach yourself. That to me is rather unfair, because there are bound to be some students in the class that won't be certain of how to proceed. Believe me, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the way that your teacher is attempting to teach. More than likely his classes are either filled with enterprising minds like yours who will find ways to teach themselves, or he will have a lot of semi-failing to downright failing students... unless he gives really, really easy tests! *laugh*

Do you have some kind of evaluation sheets distributed by the school admin staff to be filled up? Like you have to evaluate how efficient your teacher is, the teaching techniques he/she applies in the classroom. Or you have to fill out a suggestion box, voiving out your concerns. There are many ways to improve his/her teaching and at the same time your learning. I do believe, teachers only contribute 5% of the total learning of the student, 95% depends on the student him/herself.

hi! I think that nearly all has your problem..I have a problem with my businnes economy's teacher too.she doesn't explain very well and I don't understand anything! so, when I arrive home I try to study alone in the tranquillity of my house and I understand what my teacher hasn't explained or she has explaines badly.

well this is a very common problem ... The thing is that sometimes teachers don't realise what they are doing so it becomes a student's responsibility to make him/her aware of it. And yes u must always try to teach urself ;)

You may be right in saying that he is a bad teacher but remember you are going to write the Board exam and not the teacher. He may earn his salary as usual and it is your future that is at stake. so wake up and try to learn either by yourself, by combined study or by private tuition. But you students need to talk to him in a tactful way to make him understand that this loose talk wont help either. More than you I think The H.O.D.has to address this problem.study well and score A+.

i think both of you are bad because he is not doing his duty properly and you are also encouraging to it.. you should talk to your parents or the school authorities about this or else tell him that can he help you after school hours and coach you in the subject

Physics teachers are notoriously bad teachers. I just scraped by myself. Thank God I never have to take it again! Good Luck!

Well, If you ask yourself, you`ll find the answers to a major part of your problems. I feel that it would be wiser for you to remain a good student(independant), irrespective of how your teacher is. If he`s a Bad Teacher, you could put him to shame by an outstanding performance in your finals...

Well, if the professor only lectures and does not like any interaction from students, why would this make a student bad because they don't attend class and decide to watch or listen to the postcast at home?... I had and did not attend few of these classes in college. Note from another student were enough, particulary when the lecturer only worked form the book and i did not provide any additional info. on the topic beyond what could be read on one's own..
