Think up of a theme for the party, say, a Hawaiian Luau. The pick out decorations and party items like utensils, plates, cups, etc. all centering around the same theme. You could put Tiki Torches around your backyard, and dress your table up with a grass skirt wrapped around it. Give each of your guests a lei when they arrive and greet them, "Aloha"!
You could serve Hawaiian Punch, Macaroni Salad, barbecue some pork or chicken basted with pineapple juice. Serve pineapple chunks on toothpicks with small marshmallows and cocktail hotdogs or grill slices of pineapple and serve it as a side dish.
Sorry - I feel like I've gotten carried away with this whole theme, but it's really alot of fun to plan parties and seeing all of it come together.

You should make a list of who you would like to invite to the party. Then send out invitatations about 2 weeks prior to the party. Once you send those out you can find out who is coming or not so you can buy enough food and drink. Get some good music and you'll have a great party.
