Does an Apple really smoke a PC

Everyone keeps telling me to buy a n Apple for my computer artwork. I disagree. I have a custom bilt Pentium4, runs at3.4, 4 gigs of ram. I haven't found a program that slows it down yet, even in rendering 3d images. Tell me why I should spend 3 gand on a new G5, not to mention a few thousand dollars for new programs for my Apple. Seems like Fords and Chevys to me.Who cares if Bill Gates is making all of the money, seems to me he deserves it. Any Apple users out there ?

well i use also a custom built PC. i haven;t try apple yet so i have no rigths to say wheter apple or PC is better. But for me it depends on the user what PC will suit to him. wheter apple or not. it also depend on how the will use it and for what.

It depends on what applications you are using. There are some compatibility problems between pc and mac applications and files at times, so if you're working for someone who'll need your work on a mac, there might be some issues. Always test on both systems. I work with both, no complaints. Except some applications are a little buggy on pc's, others are buggy on mac's. They both crash when you really push them to the limit and if you don't do regular system maintenance. But be aware that there is a huge mac "faction" in graphic design. And a tiny pc "faction" (mostly of people of do web/game development).

Personally, I'm glad I have access to both (my home pc is lagging behind though). The whole thing about mac's being easier to use is BS in my opinion. The interface follows the same principles. Most applications are now available for both systems. What some mac "zealots" preach is that mac's have hardware that is tested thoroughly and will never present conflicts. But today, pc's can be configured to perform just as well. If you have already invested in a high-end pc, and if you're not working with people who are working with mac's, I wouldn't switch. But you know how snooty mac people are! ;)

Exactly my point ! I can do things with this PC that I couldn't do with a Mac, yet I miss out on alot of work because every wants me to have Mac exsperiance. I built my PC for speed and reliability, so it's never been a problem for me. Out of the box, how would you guys rate a PC to a Mac?

Ah, that's my point. On my PC I run programs like Vue, Poser, Lightwave, PSP, Adobe, etc. I've never maxed out my system yet and I get pretty demanding.I just don't understand all the fuss with Macs, they both crash, they both run programs, they're both easy. Just doen't make sense to switch does it?

In truth, yes, an Apple or MAC Computer can smoke a PC. The reason, MAC do not freeze up or catch viruses like PC's do. Also things just come out better on MAC, only problem with MAC is that they are not PC's. PC are designed for doing just about anything.

My favorite discussion...
I am a user of both systems. I have used the original IBM PC and the original Apple II, Apple III, Lisa and finally the Mac. I've had various Mac systems over the years, and currently I have one of the new 20" Intel iMacs. In the office I have to use Windows, and I use a desktop and laptop both with Windows XP.
First of all, Apple has come up with most of the innovations in the PC industry. First graphical user interface (Lisa and then Macintosh had it way before Microsoft had even developed Windows), first use of the mouse in a computer (apple II), a lot of user interface elements Microsoft later copied (anybody know that the first Software Update was actually developed by Apple, way before Microsoft implemented it on Windows).
Apple was dominating the PC business in the 80s. What happened in the meantime? Apple had some lousy business decisions, and ended up with a very expensive system and a mediocre operatins system. When Steve Jobs re-joined the company, he brought his programming experts from Next, and they were able to finally introduce a Unix-based operating system, namely OS X.
Now for the comparison: Until about 2-3 years ago, you really had to like the Mac or you had to be a graphical designer to dole out the extra money to buy a Mac. Because they used non-standard components, a Mac was more expensive than a similar PC. Lately this has changed, since Apple started using standard components, and culminated this trend with a switch to the Intel processor, which enabled it to use much cheaper industry-standard components. They also managed to pull the price down so that a Mac system now is a bit cheaper than a PC-equivalent.
For example, I use this new iMac at home, and it has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. I have a laptop in the office, which -*surprise* - uses the same processor. I use Office 2007 in the office, and Office 2004 at home. (I do have a Windows laptop at home as well, a Sony Vaio) Most of the time we use Office applications at home and at work, and we also browse the Internet. All of these programs are very similar and standard in both platforms.
So, Macs and PCs have very similar price schemes and similar programs nowadays. One advantage Macs have is that virus authors have not yet spent enough time to create dangerous Mac viruses. Unix in general has less vulnerabilities than Windows as well, and Mac OS X is Unix.
Switching only makes sense if you are about to get rid of an old computer, if you want to take advantage of the slightly better graphics and User Interface features of Macs.

Killer reply! I've spent the last few years adding and building up my system here, the one i'm typing on. I can't imagine a Mac running the way this one does, although maybe it would help my typing, lol. Seriously, having 2 diffrerent formats in an industry has caused me nothing but problems. Do open source programs work both on Macs and PC's, I've never used those either. As far as virus', I think your system is only as safe as you keep it.

ohhh I have to say yes. I am on a PC now but I bought my son an Apple. He is a computer whiz and wouldn't have anything else. They are faster, easier to navigate etc...I started on an Apple years ago and it was much easier to use than a PC. You have to buy this other stencil thing to go with it for the best graphics...it is essential. I think you shoud check it out.

You can buy things to go along with your PC too.
You probably just have a slower older PC. And as far as easier to use, that depends on who's using it.
I'm used to DOS, keyboard commands, doing things the good old fashioned way. For me, an Apple is made to be so easy that it's difficult. I've never been able to do anywhere near as much on an Apple as a PC.

Exactly, apple computers are amazing. Most computer viruses don't effect apple computers too. They have good programs, and seem to run much smoother. They definatly are better then pcs.

Well I have been using apple for 20 years now. Yes I had one of the first ones. I have always used it. I have a print shop and that is what we bought. I can say I am now using (at home) my first windows laptop. Have not used it for anything but email. I guess if what you are using works why change. Most of the programs you need for your artwork can now be bought for windows. I myself prefer the apple. I feel safe on it. I guess that is why I bought this laptop. My apple comp. broke and it is cheaper to buy these computers.

You may be comparing Apples to oranges, if you'll pardon the pun.
'New G5' is an oxymoron; Apple moved to Intel chips over a year ago and has steadily released Intel machines with faster clock speeds since then.
I'm using a year old Mac mini, which costs much less than 3 grand-- it's a small box with the CPU, you plug it into your current monitor, keyboard, etc.
The current Intel Macs are quite fast, probably comparable to PCs. Both types of machines use similar chips I'd think, Intel Core 2 Duo if that's the correct current name.
Most designers/art directors/etc. I know use Macs; they feel that programs like Quark, Photoshop, etc. run better on Macs even though there are PC versions.

Its true that Photoshop and other graphic design software runs better at MAC but if it as good in PC why not. It's a matter of comfort on how you do you work. I'm a graphic designer myself and I am adept on Windows and Ubuntu graphic design softwares.

I just got a MacBook and I think it is amazing. I've made two family movies already. I highly suggest Apple if you are into design or artsy stuff.

Great discussion and thanks for bringing it up! I have been wondering about this myself. I have never owned a mac but I have heard so many people say they are better. I have had so many problems with my last few laptops, but I am beginning to think it is a Dell thing, rather than a PC thing. I would rather my computer be able to do anything I would like it to do (which mine does, it just craps out on me often even though it's only a year old)...based on this discussion I think I will stick to PCs

I don't agree that apple computer are good to be purchased because I am using windows for the last 6 years and it is the most user friendly OS ever built and almost 75% of all the programs are built for windows so I don't think there is any need for switching from windows to apple and even graphics needs are fulfilled in windows pased PC's.

Apple used to be great for artwork, but since then, the PC has picked up the pace, and is ever better now, with better art software.

Yes!! I say its your own opinion. Macs have +'s and -'s but so do PC's. Your computer sounds amazing. Its custom...so its meant to be. I agree with you why should you switch if you love your current computer? I love my macbook but its not got much space but that cuz i chose the smaller one!! Anyway dont listen to other ppl just get what you want. Liek i was on of the first in my school to get this computer and then sudenly everyone got it cuz other ppl were getting it and stuff it was just such bull....anyway i would just keep yours.. if you cant find a program to slow it down. TRY THE SIMS!!!!!

I think apple work in secret to microsoft, they get a lot of stuff from them, I think they are friends, no enemies
