Walking Rules: "Dumb walkers"

Do you ever notice that some people just aren't very good walkers? They'll not pay attention to the "lanes" or walk on the left side of the sidewalk. I don't understand why people walk on the left side when there are lots of people present, we drive on the right side don't we? (excuse me Europeans, you get the idea)
It makes me mad when people take bad angles while walking and make it harder for people to get by them or walk on the wrong side and screw up the whole order of the sidewalk "traffic".
Then there's the famous "I think I'll come to a stand-still right now to look at my phone while there are 10 people about to crash into me" (then they give you a look when you have to dodge them...)
Do you guys notice a certain etiquette involved with walking and do you get upset when people break it?

Hahah .. well this made me chuckle .. I have witnessed these 'dumb walkers' .. in fact I have been one of them a fair few times .. completely absorbed in what I am doing or thinkng and then suddenly changing direction or coming to a sudden stand still ..
Walking is probably one of the few things we can still do that we don't get training for .. maybe you could start a 'Learn to Walk Well' school ..

LOL, I agree. A school for learning to walk would be great. or maybe not a whole school. Just a class that we could take in our early years.
I really had never given too much thought to the issue until you brought it up. To be honest, I don't see many people just walking around here in Missouri when I am out and about, at least in the sense that it sounds like you are talking about out on the streets, and not, say, inside a shopping mall or other such store. But the situations you described could get a bit frustrating, yes.

Yes, havingto be 5 seconds later is just SUCH an inconvenience, isn't it. Apparently rude people have left their cars, and hit the sidewalks. What next. sidewalk traffic signs that say you have to walk at a speed of over 5 kilometers an hour or be fined? get a grip people! stop and look around you, is there really anything so important that you can't be one minute later?

geeze, anal much? the sidewalk doesn't have "lanes" in case you haven't noticed. and just because YOU are in a hurry doesn't mean everyone else is. I'll bet you are one of those people who hates seeing a mother letting her toddler walk on the sidewalk as well. The side walk id for people whi want to go a little slower in life than you. i suggest you just step into the road for a few steps to go around, instead of expecting everyone to move at your speed.

I've witnessed dumb walkers before while in college, but i guess at the same time it was the worry of not going to make it to class on time that some people just weren't thinking.

My thoughts exactly. I always wondered why people think traffic works differently because wheels aren't involved.

i totally agree with you and that is what really makes me angry when people just stop walking because they have to make some important phone call. another thing that makes me angry is when people walk so slow up the stairs and there is no room to get around them.

Maybe if drivers stayed on the road it would be easier for pedestrians to know where they could walk safely.
I have been almost run over on a number of occassions whn I've been quite happily walking on the pavement.

Ha, Yes it's very true. I hate it when the people in front of you are with thier entire family, and there is no way to get around them, and they are walking at a snails-pace...So you are forced to slow down considerably, or seem rude and try to push your way through. *sigh* when will the slow walkers learn? (: Good post. Very funny.

its true in Grand Theft Auto Vice City, OMG I turn the corner, its shows I can turn on a red light, A dumb Vice City Cop runs and I accidently run him over, That dumb cop gave me one star, I disagree, I got out and shot 15 cops and continually until I got six stars, My fun was fun, I took a car into spray and paint, and then my stars dissapeared.

LOL this is a great one! you know what irritates me is in the department stores, people will push their basket on the left side and go slower than what i want to go on the right side and ill have to wait for them to move or scoot over so i can pass. What really gets me is the people who park their basket in the middle of an aisle and stand beside it reading labels on the food. Come on people, move your basket over to the side so that others can pass and not have to wait for you to finish reading! Or the ones who just cut out in front of you and make you almost run into them then give you dirty looks for almost smacking into them!

yes it is a universal law to always go to the right. it is also annoying when people walk up the steps on the left side instead of just walking in the line like everyone else. They want to try and hurry and rush up the left side before someone comes and you end up having to try and find a way to push past them

I think this "dumb walking" may be due to problems with coordination.

yah i totally agree with you. some people zigzag while walking or stop every few seconds to look at something or fling their arms around. sometimes couples walk far enough apart to take up the whole sidewalk so you cant walk around them or through them. its really annoying. i walk pretty slow, but i am always nice when walking. if i see someone is coming up fast behind me, i make way for them. sometimes i walk on the left side but that's usually only when there arent that many people on the sidewalk so they have plenty of room to walk.

i understand sidewalk "traffic" but sometimes there's just something on the other side you want to get to. my only problem is when you get stuck in front of someone coming at you and you go one way to go around, and they go the same way. especially if you're in a rush. but what do you expect when its crowded. normally when it is crowded theres a reason for it. normally, there's an etiquitte for everything, hey even for using the bathroom, and everythere has differn rules to different things they do. its not all black and white sometimes.

oh i notice this all the time! Around where i live there are people on sidewalks everywhere and it makes me mad when they stop in the middle of no where... i remember one time i told a girl "please don't stop right by the door" and she was like "Oh shut up an get a life I was checking my cellphone".... haha about 6 other people around were like "go somewhere else to do that1" it was amusing, but people like that are so annoying...

I can agree with you on most of it, but as someone from a small community I didn't realize there was so much involved when I decide to go for a walk. I didn't realize we had a certain side of the sidewalk that we were supposed to walk on.I am not trying to be rude so I am sorry if it is coming across that way. It's just I am from a small town and sidewalk "traffic" just sounds kind of funny to me.
