What do you think about the chicken who crossed the road joke?

I think it is to test the response of the person being asked, to find out if the reply is original,witty, clever or dumb. Perhaps this is why there so many versions of this joke. http://www.gooddocuments.com/mapdemo/introduction.htm

I'm thinking that someone would ask the question to different people, & then each one would come up with a different answer. Some of them might make sense, & some, maybe not. The funnier/sillier/outrageous ones that you just have to laugh at are the answers that pretty much get remembered & told with that answer. Like the guy above posted, that's the only answer I heard too.

I've only ever heard the answer to this joke to be "to get to the other side". I don't think it's a very humourous joke at all, but I suppose to young children it probably is. What are the other answers you've heard to the joke?
