$8.00-$ 8.50 a bale!I live within a major horse county, just outside of Denver, Colo. With the recent blizzards, we've seen prices of grass hay mix jumping to $ 8.00 a bale and up! Is this the norm around the croutry right now? It may be cheaper to send the horses to the Carribean for the winter. ( joking of course ).

Down in South Australia, we have had two bad hay seasons, and are looking at $20 dollars a bale for just ordinary grass/meadow hay. Luckily for us, our own hay grew really well this year so we can feed our own. However, the pasture we left for grazing dried out due to a lack of rain, and now we are running on a high fire risk. Buying from fodder stores is of course cheaper, so sometimes it is best to hire a trailer and bulk buy from a farmer.

$9.50 a bale for grass hay and $10.00 a bale for alfalfa in Oklahoma. Our high hay prices are because of the drought. Many people only got about 1/3 of what they usually bale. No rain, no grass, no hay. Sure hope we get the rain here this spring and summer.

If i convert it to my currency it sound like allot, here we pay R30.00 for a bale, now if i convert it to dollars it is $4.28. But R30.00 is very expensive here. I have 8 horses and 2 mares comming into foal at the end of this year, our springtime and I have decided to start planting my own feed. It is going to be too expensive to buy food for 11 horses. I have irrigation for 8 hectares, so why not use it.

Here in North Carolina hay prices have slowly climbed all last year. Orchard grass hay was $7.00 a square bale, and alfalfa at least a dollar more. It is outrageous! We don't even have the excuse of blizzards. Although some of this hay comes from very far away (Montana, etc.) even the bales that were baled here in this county cost just as much. And god forbid you want timothy, thats at least $14 a bale.

wow, i feel for all of you where the weather's been bad... and we complain here in NJ, we need to get a grip! We can find timothy bales, decent sized, anywhere from $4 up to $12, always cheapest to buy directly from the farm, but there are a lot of feed dealers around, you pay for the convenience, kinda like spending $4 on toilet paper at the gas mart rather than drive an extra 5 minutes to the supermarket... Alfalfa is scarce here though, usually costs about $10-$12, as much as $30! gotta round some up this week, prego mare will need soon...
