When you rate a person's comments on MyLot, how does it mean to the person being rated and the person doing the rating?

myLot does have a policy on rating, so I'm sure it affects both the rater and the ratee. You are supposed to give low ratings to comments or responses that are not following the topic, but I'm sure people will abuse it and rate opinions they strongly disagree with. ((which is against the rating policy)) I give positive ratings for responses I like. ((which is like agreeing with them, which isn't in the policy)) I always give positives to people who respond to my discussions 'on topic'. I also give positive ratings to the discussions/topics I like... I figure "if it got my interest and I wanted to reply... it was worth rating". So your rated +

I do the same too. When I was new, I did rate -ve because I find some comments offensive. (Only the first few times) but gradually as I get used to the MyLot community, I am beginning to accept that everyone has a different way of communicating.

I just found today about the rating system & I, too, do the same way you all do. If it caught my attention then I rate it & if I see really good comments I rate them too. So down the road, hopefully we will be helping each other as a community.

This reponse is based on reading another similar discussion, so I can't be 100% sure of its accuracy, but I'll try my best. A negative or positive feedback rating effects the person being rated in a negative or positive way, respectively. (I believe that there are cautains taken/tools used to ensure that one person is not rating the same person the same way all the time, etc.) If the person rating is always rating negatively, however, I believe it has an impact on their rating as well, so as to prevent people from abusing the rating system. I've just recetly starting understanding this myself-and I usually only rate the "good" or positive responses because even if someone is rude or offensive, I don't feel better by "getting back at them". I just move on-there's so much more to do here anyway!

Yep, I wish those of you who are seasonsed and experienced in MyLot would give us some ideas so that we can also learn to rate intelligently.

I rate responses to other discussions with a positive (+) if I think the person has given consideration and thought to their response. Similarly I give a 'best response' to a response for discussions I start and others which are good I give a positive (+) to. So far not given a negative (-) to any discussion although a couple of times I would have liked to but decided it is a bit harsh to do do when so many other members obviously have responded to the discussion. I believe it will affect the rating or else why would we be given that option. I have no doubt that there are checks and balances to see that nobody is given a rating unfairly or by the same person all the time. :)

Thanks for your thoughts and pointers. MyLot did not give clear cut way of rating. Let's hope some of the more experienced ones will give us some hint on this.

You get a point and the other person you are responding to his comments also gets a point too

I just joined mylot, and I was wondering how do I get the rating symbols on the side of my posts. I see everyone has the symbols by their post.

Really no ideas on that but I think since they allocate for "best responsed " there must be some reasons...probably you will few extra cents for either way it take.

I don't know the impact it really has but I'm sure it has some kind of effect if it's there.
