Why do you think hordes of girls go for beauty contests?

YES in large and bold letters. If a person is interested in making a career in fashion and beauty industry he/she may just apply and get in on the basis of eligibility and get going.I suppose even doctors and engineers would have to do such shows if these were meant to prove their calibre. It's a shame for our generation which is so educated and so called'advanced' to misuse the human body and soul to such extent. We must remember that all those girls up there are also pained at this show but they do it for survival.

I think for girls over 16 it may be o.k. depending on the contest and its rules. It is to bad that intelligence and personality are no as imortant as beauty in some cultures. On the other hand for children that are younger, especially under 10 and especially 5,6,7, I think it is disgusting and dangerous. There are just too many sick, perverted people in the world. Just look at the photos of Jon Benet Ramsey. She looked like a little wh*** and was taught to act like one. It's no wonder some sicko got confused. She did not deserve to be murdered, but her parents and family that allowed it should be held just as much responsible as the animal that did it.

creativemuse, you raised a noteworthy point about keeping children out of such contests. Agree with you totally that the responsiblity lies with parents. Is there any value at all in introducing them the shortcut to fame?

You stare at a female's figure in public and you are a pervert. She takes her clothes off and THEN you stare at her and if you like her you give her a prize. That's healthy competition and appreciation of beauty. Of course it's a flesh parade. Why else would they take their clothes off. If they really enjoy exhibition of their physical self then it would be right to glare at their privates anytime, anywhere. Besides, no woman would be taking part in such competitions if they were just given a cheap crown and sent home. This is not about beauty, this is about money and publicity, and naked flesh sells - period.

I think that if you have the body why not. You win a prize in the end. If you need money or a scholarship I think there's nothing wrong with it.

I guess it's the money and fame thing and of course they've got what it takes to qualify for a beauty contest. I think it's quite ingenious of the organisers too: to test their brains when they are in their swimming costumes - would you agree?
