My daughter is looking at buying a video camera. I am a still photographer and have never done much with video. I am looking for some information on what to look for in a video camera? What is a good brad? What media is best to record the video on if you want to placeit on a computer.

It depends on what she wants to do with the video camera. Is it going to be primarily used to video family events, school events and that type of thing or does she want to start and create movies on it? Does she want digital or the VHS tape type camera. I bought a digital Canon ZR 300 for a few hundred bucks. It uses mini DV tapes and also it uses SD cards.(Some use a mini DVD disc to record on.) It has a bunch of features that I haven't had time to try them all out yet but one of them is that it also takes still photos as well. I can hook it up to my TV and record shows onto tape or card or hook it up to the VCR and record videos from it onto my camera and then transfer them to a computer. This feature is great if you have home vidoes made with the VHS type camera and you want to put them on DVD. A good way to find what you want for the purpose she wants to use it for is do a review search on the net. Where they compare the different types and tell you what each type is good for. Hope this helps.

I will look at at the site. I usually shop ebay and buy from a seller that does a large volume in cameras or electronics. I have gotten some very good deals.

Sony takes the lead in Digital video Camera technology. HDR cameras are now cheaper and with astonishly better result. But if you want to go for size. Then JVC takes the lead. But i would suggest you go for Sony Camera as that is a lifetime investment.I have one which is still in good use of me and was purchased by me five years ago.And still all parts are available.

Thanks for the reply. I will talk to her and see what she plans to use the camera for. I will then start my research and will include Sony and JVC.

I'm afraid I have no personal experience of using a camcorder, but a friend used a Sony DV camcorder when we were out one day. It produced som great pictures which we were able to edit very easily, and we also pulled from the video, some very good quality stills.
