I have hamsters, too for about 3 months now. Since hamsters are very tiny rodents (yes, they belong to the family of rats), the best time to tame them are when they are young. Theolder a hamster gets, the harder it will be of taming him. Start by talking to your hamster and make sure not to pick him up until you are sure that he's not frightened of you. They will bite you in an instant if they are afraid. If there are signs of stress, leave him in a bit and stroke him after awhile. If you really wanna pick him up, do it at the scruff of his neck. Just like the way how a mother hamster carry his babies (looking at books on how they do it, will help). Be patient though, as it will take you a month the least just to tame your hamster. Make sure to provide your hamster the following basic needs: 1. Cage - Never use wood for a hamsters cage as he will just eat his way out. Do not keep the cage near heaters, direct sunlight, or near any appliances that heats up. It will just cut the hamster's life expectancy tremendously. Glass tank is a good hamster cage, so he won't feel imprisoned. 2. food - hamster's eat variety of foods. So, make sure to avoid feeding him citrus fruits as it will cause harm to your hamster. 3. water - hamsters need fresh water. So, it will be better to buy him a specially designed water bottle for your hamster that you can buy in any pet shops. 4. hiding place - provide your hamsters with a small log or a cardboard box. Do not take your hamster out of his hiding place when he's hiding he needs to feel safe to sleep and privacy. 5. toys - hamsters love to play. Make sure to get him a wheel. 5. bedding materials - best ones should be plain pine wood shavings or saw dust. But, do not buy scented ones to avoid allergic reactions. Most comfortable for your hamster would be at least is 2 inches bed. You can also use shreded paper as bedding but make sure to avoid newspapers as it contains chemicals that will harm your hamsters.
