My son is 8 years old. He just joined a swim team. He has been learning to swim since he was 4 or 5, but he just started competing in the fall. So far, he usually come in last or close to it. I feel bad for him. I know he really likes it and I know he wants to place better. More practice I guess. The good thing is, he doesn't take it really hard and he doesn't want to give up. So I'm wondering if any of your young swimmers had a tough time getting started.

Cool! My 14 year old wants to join a swim team. We checked at the YMCA but this session already started so he has to wait until spring. I think that swimming is a great sport to learn and really teaches endurance. Good for him!

Awwww that is great! He has determination and perseverance. Those are admirable character traits. I hope he never loses that. To him it is all about having fun. If he gets down about finishing last, remind him that he will get better and that some of the kids just have a lot more experience. The same EXACT scenario describes my oldest child's attempt at playing softball. Even by first grade many of those girls had been competing for 2-3 years...that makes a big difference with 7 year olds at how much better they are.

thanks ladies. I know he is not getting "down". I just hope he doesn't decide to quit. He has lots of potential. He must see it too.
