I think in many cases celebrities do get off easier in court. Their fame gets them special treatment and some judges / juries may even be star struck. If the celebrity ever has to go to prison, they are given special treatment and separated from other inmates. Examples of celebrities getting off easy in court are: Martha Stewart, Michael Jackson, Hugh Grant, etc.

Yes. I really dislike the idea of special prisons or special prison privilages. I hadn't thought about the star struck jury members. Good point.

I'd say yes they do. They commit all kinds of criems and it's never a big deal. A few weeks ago Jake Peavy (a pitcher for San Diego) had his car parked illegally and was told to move it. He said just give me the ticket and I'll pay. He was arrested and released on $300 bail. I thought that was kind of cool. For bigger crimes i.e. rape and murder (Simpson, Bryant) they get away with it. Like an article in Sports Illustrated once said: "The United States has a good justice system, if Kobe didn't do it, he'll be found not guilty. If he did do it, he'll be found not guilty"

This is my largely uninformed opinion, because I didn't really follow either case, but I think that the cases of OJ Simpson and Robert Blake show that the individual circumstances and the public opinion of the defendant play in what happens in court. I think that OJ got off in part because he was so popular and though to be a "nice guy". Then with Robert Blake, I think he was partly hurt by the OJ fiasco, and I also think that the fact that he just gave off a creepy vibe didn't help him. It made it a little easier to believe that he could have ordered that hit because of his demeanor.
I don't know what can really be done to help the celebrity factor either way. People are human and they can't help coming into court with preconceived notions of a celebrity. Maybe if they'd pay attention to the fact that they are in the public eye and just not break the law!!!!
In fact, that reminds me of the movie Liar Liar with Jim Carrey. Once he is only able to tell the truth, one of his perpetual clients comes to him after yet another arrest and asks the Jim Carrey character for advice. Jim's advice, "Stop breaking the law, a**hole!"

We see it all the time, they can do pretty well whatever they want and get away with it aslong as you got the green to back you up. The best example I have for you is OJ and Michael Jackson, both got off way easy for what they probably did. I know it was not proven in court that they did what they were accused of but common.

Ya many a times the celebrities get off easyt in the court after commiting a crime....but many a times they are punished heavily..........but no matter how easily they get off their public image is spoilt once they are in the court.......they become the topic for chat everywhere.....and it puts a black mark on their image.

I believe celebrities get off easy in court. Just ask O.J. or Martha Stewart. Martha used her inside sources for the stock market and should have gotten in more trouble, but she is rich. And OJ, well everyone already knows. Drink the apple juice, cause OJ will kill you!ha, Thanks.

My goodness, yes. What about OJ Simpson? I mean, I knw that nothing was proven, but I have a feeling if he were not a celebrity that things might have gone very differently. We just have such a tendency to put celebrities on a pedestal. I don't think that many of them serve the amount of time that they should, or get off entirely. I'm not sure what can be done about it, but it is pretty unfair, I have to say.
