why are people so materialistic?

lately i have been woundering who to blame for people being so materialistic. i blame tv. honestly i cant watch tv for an hour without seeing sum get rich quick, or sum reality show of celebs with 30million dollar homes. like that one show on mtv or vh1 about how much celebs spend on designer hand bags, and their houses and what not, it just makes me sick! i was woundering what people thought about this because i thought this would be a very good topic to discuss. i think the best way to live would be moderate. you have enough money to go out from time to time, and have half way decent homes and vehicles! let me know what you guys think!
