All those items feed the part of the brain which calls to be fed. It is very similar to gambling addiction and other situations. It is odd that it would destroy a host when normally it would seem to want to preserve it's part central and continue its pattern. Smoking doesn't harm a life as quickly as the pharmaceuticals. Its effects on the body are a bit more subtle in short term than the chemicals.

YOu are right that narcotics can be much worse in short term but smoking can also be worth in the long run!
