Do you still use a dictionary?

I have a dictionary which must have come out of the Ark. The pages are yellow and the corners are turned up but I still use it to make sure that my spelling is correct even though we have the spell checker on our computers. I suppose its just a matter of being old fashioned like not using calculators. I feel better when I know I've done it the old fashioned way. How about you?

Yes, I have a dictionary in my desk drawer and I use it when necessary. I have never had trouble with spelling. In fact I won a State spelling bee when I was at school, but now that I'm 70 I find that sometimes I forget things such as which ending is correct: "ant or ent" "ance or ence" "able or ible" etc. I do not use a spell checker as quite often it will miss a word simply because even though it is the wrong word, it is still a word. I prefer to proof read myself and any endings I'm not sure of, I'll look in the dictionary. It is just as quick as checking on the computer.

Hi cloudwatcher. I see you are in the same generation as me so we are possibly less PC inclined and rely on our old upbringings. (PS....I was beginning to think I was in the wrong place being so old..!!)

Looks like we've got the three muskateers here....I'm in between the two of you....this week that is.....could you and I are the same age but in the not too far distant future I will be one up on you.....oh how I love the sound of that...not very often I can one up someone...hehehehehe. I never had computers when I was still working. I have been using them for about 10 years now and on the net for about 8. I am reliving my youth and I love it.

Thanks "oldie". Actually I work at the computer up to 16 hours a day, doing voluntary secretarial work and writing lessons for children's and teens ministry. I can't say I'm new to PC since I've been using it now for about 15 years or more, but I am new to internet. I accidentally discovered myLot during the holidays. Good to talk.

I do this do. I prefer it cause there are times that pc dictionaries don't have always the right spelling or the words that are similar are coming first so, I save time that way.

remaster the difference in spelling is that of "American" English and English English.....the English tend to use different endings...i.e., color - colour. I find it amusing that they use Doctor and not Doctour...

I don't know much about on-line dictionary's remaster. But I find that the big one I have does give me alternative words.

I adore the old books. I use what with which I was going to school, but my english has many mistakes. I never throw an old book, and do not renew it, if only I cover him with plastic.

ohh yes i also keep my dictionary handy all the time.. i used to check my pronunciation and laso for grammatical check aswell. Some times i also check on my spellings aswell. Old fashioned idcionary has its own charm... and by searching for my particualr word eventually i saw seevral other words to increase my knowledge and vocabulary.

Hi sj-chaudry nice to meet you. Well I find other words that I could use instead of the one I had in mind so from that perspective you are quite right.

yes, i still use the dictionary --- but i don't use the old ones much anymore because there are new words and new spellings that come up which we couldn't see in old dictionaries. i use microsoft encarta and the internet as references.

You are right there toonatoons. There are so many words that are being used these days and that are added to the English dictionary. Many more than my old school days.

I love my dictionary too. But unlike you, I use online resources too, side by side with the conventional ones.

Hi ashjoe. How are you today? Oh I too do use online resources as you call them. My spell checker on 'Word' is always being used. Even on here I check back and there is a number of words with the red line under. I put that down mainly to the fact I cannot type either!

Yes, I do and will probably keep for a very long time. I also have an old set of encyclopedias. I keep them on hand for my children. Some of their assignments require the use of other materials in addition to the internet.

My set is better old but my kids still enjoy using them. Sometimes, it's much easier for them in find a topic in the encyclopedia than it is to find online. I'm sure your grandchild will enjoy them for a very long time.

Hi spreadout. Don't you write letters by hand? I find that when I do I have to search for meanings and spelling in my dictionary

this is true, but we can't learn more through spell checker, we must read a lot of english books, as novel, news papers, magzines, etc, whenever we face problem to understanding sentances than we can use dictionary.

I still use a dictionary but the difference is that i use the online version nowadays. using a dictionary is a healthy habit, coz i have seen lots of my colleagues asking me for spellings when they have to write a letter etc, n it doesnt give a gud impression.

To have a pocket dictionary is good. because when you go aboard and some people might talk some word that is actually not familiar to you. in order to prevent it you need to carry a pocket dictionary with you always in your pocket heh. it`ll help you alot and increases your vocabulary.thx. Good day!

I still look at the dictionary to check some spelling which I doubt to be wrong and also to look at the meaning of some profound the words I encounter on a regular basis. Most of the time I use it when the computer is turned off or if I was really looking for more details which I suspect a dictionary might not provide....I go directly to the search it on the internet.

Thanks for posting jmpilapil. Well at my age I do get confused sometimes with different spellings and I am very pleased we have a spell check here on Mylot. You should see all the words I get with the red line under it!

I agree there Rosie but I do write a lot of letters by hand to friends and relatives and I don't like using the PC for those. It seems to injudicious. But I do write my official letters on the computer.

Yes, I still use a dictionary. If the spellchecker tells me it's wrong but can't find the correct spelling, I defer to the trusty old dictionary. It's amazing to see what the spellchecker comes up with for words when you are trying to find a completely different word.

Yes I've found that too. Sometimes the spell checker will split the word into two parts, don't know why. Thanks for your input dmillman.
