I just bought new cast iron pots and pans ... it's a line out by the chef Emril.
The instructions say that it is common for pans/pots that have not been properly seasoned to rust. All you need to do is wipe it out with a mild soap. Towel dry it and then put it in the oven while you preheat it to 300 degrees. After it is dry, coat with flavorless vegetable oil and place on a cookie sheet upside down. Place back in oven for awhile. When the pan/pot comes out wipe excess oil off.
Repeat everytime you use the pot/pan.

Thank you very much. This is a set that was given to me, and was never properly seasoned, but I am now able to cook really good cornbread, thanks to your help!

Never ever throw out a cast iron pan! When my old pan got rusted due to storage problems, I used a choreboy and some cleanser to get out the rust. Once you remove the rust you need to season the pan again. It will be good as new.

I think you may need to throw it out. I don't know how safe it would be to keep cooking out of it. I do know that once you buy a new one, you need to lubricate it with cooking oil and let it set in the pan for awhile before using.

The rust is a danger, I would toss it out and buy a new one, one tip is when you are done cooking with it is to NOT but cold water on it, let it cool down by itself.
