Cash, Check, or Debit

I rarely see anyone using checks to pay for purchases any more. In all honesty, I can't remember the last time I even wrote a check. I even pay my bills online. When you shop do you use cash, check, or a debit card? I always use my debit card and rarely have cash on me.

I write a few checks--for rent, utilities, dentist, and to reimburse relatives. I do some online bill paying but only if it's free.
My older sister writes checks at the grocery store, etc., which I find REALLY antiquated.
I pay almost everything I can with my credit card; I don't have to pay it for 3-5 weeks, and I earn points that I can redeem for cash, gift certificates for online stores, etc. I pay my bill in full each month so never have to pay interest.

I use cash or a card. We only write two checks a month and those are both to bills that don't accept online billpay. I don't know my pin number for my debit card, but I just use it as a credit card.
The only reason I use cash is because I work two Saturdays a month as a barber. I make about $60 or so each week in tips so I have that in cash. We never actually take cash out at the ATM or when we deposit my check (my husband's is direct deposit). Credit and debit cards are just more convenient.

Yep I totally agree. I only use cash sometimes, but mostly credit. Plus, I get points for using my credit card and get cash back.
When I bought a house a few months back, I actually had to open a checking account just so I could write a few checks for the insurance, home inspector and other places that wouldn't take credit. Now I have a whole two boxes of checkbooks and I've only used about 5 of them! I forget how to write checks a lot of times too which may sound dumb, but when you don't do it that often you just forget!

It is true not many people use checks anymore. I find that I can get away with only ordering about a half a box of checks and they will last me about a year. I use checks for very few bills anymore, most of which I can pay online with my debit card. I do still send some companies an actual check. As far as purchases, I can not remember the last time that I wrote a check for any of them. Debit cards have just become so convieanant and so much faster than even paying cash.

I too, use my card the most! It seems to take so much time to write out a check.................I guess I am lazy. Anyway it makes it easier to see what I have spent if I use the card at the end of each month. I never carry cash becuase then it gets wasted on stuff I don't even know what I spent it on mostof the time.

Yup, me too! I use my debit card for everything, including fastfood stops! I only carry ten dollars or less in cash, just for those few archaic places who refuse a debit card. I too pay my bills online. There are a few who do not offer that service so I am forced to write a check and mail those payments. Each time I do that, I swear that I will not shop there in the future, but undoubtedly I end up shopping there. I only shop with those stores' cards when there is a '20% off if you use your card deal' otherwise I use my regular debit so that I can pay online! I so wish I could convince my mother to use her debit card. She is older and set in her ways. She insists on standing in the already long, long line at Wal-Mart and SLOWLY writing her check. I am the one glancing embarrassingly at those behind me who are red-faced with steam pouring out their ears. All I can do is smile and say, "Have a nice day. Your Mother will be old one day too."

I use cash the majority of the time and every once and a while I'll use debit if needed.
Using cheques to me is kind of outdated, unless I'm giving my employer a void cheque to pay me via direct deposit. I find cheques pretty useless actually. What happens if your cheque bounces for what you paid? Then you have to write another one or pay another way. If you don't have the money, or you bounce too many cheques at one place then the business you bought the item from can put you on their blacklist. The dreaded "We don't accept cheques from" list.
I prefer to use cash because then I know the items I'm buying are getting paid for right then and there. Usually I'll call around to different stores to get the prices for certain things I want to buy so I can figure out how much cash I need to take with me. Plus, at least with cash I don't have to worry about getting into credit problems because of bounced cheques or insufficient funds on my credit card.
I use debit from time to time for small purchases but I don't really like doing this either because of the threat of identity theft nowadays. I don't like the idea of going into a supermarket and knowing or suspecting that my personal info can become publicly accessed by one swipe of my bank card. I find it just as good as cash, but with the limitation of getting those insufficient funds warnings if you buy more than is in your bank account.
So, in conclusion, I find the best method of payment for anything in my mind is cash/debit. Any other form of payment for items just isn't at all for me currently.

I usually use debit card and sometimes cash. I had a problem once where a check that was written to my son's school was stolen and the culprit made a $3. check into a $90. check and cashed it in another city. Because they cashed it at a food chain in our area, I was on the data base and they didn't bother to ask for ID. It ended up being a big deal and I ended up paying for all of the charges because of the way the teacher filed the report. I don't trust checks much any more.

I use my debit card for everything. I don't carry much cash on me and I never have checks. The debit card is just so much easier, I think it must have been invented by a mom since it makes it easier with kids, no trying to write a check one handed, or digging through your purse looking for money while trying to keep kids close by. I also pay almost all bills online, so I only have one bill I use a check for.

Well I dont really use checks either, sometimes I do if its a large amount of money going to like my gym or my car getting fixed. But most of the time I use debt, its more of a convience. I carry some cash on me but not much, just enough in case I cant use my debt on something.

I rarely have cash on me as well. I almost always use my debit card anymore. Though I do still pay with checks for quite a few bills. There are some I just won't pay online.

i hate using cash and i get irritated when people in front of me use cash or write a cheque.plastic is the way to go,its so fast, convenient and hassel free.when people in front of you in the grocery store start paying by cash /cheque, they cause a delay and take so much time, i wonder why they bother.

I prefer to go all old fashioned and use cash. I think it's the way purchases should be made because you know what sort of money you have, what sort of money you're going to expend and what sort of money will be left on you once the transaction is done. I think debit or credit cards are a bit more "painful" because there's always the problems with the banks and what not regarding their usage. Checks are indeed a rare these days but I think some people still use it.
