If we can teach ourselves, what is the purpose of teachers?

Sure! You can find what you still don't master and be more good at what you studied via homework. But homework can't do all that teachers do.You learn from teachers via senses of listening, viewing and speaking, but can't do all these via homework. And I think it's easier for us to learn sth. from teachers cuz teachers will teach you untill you understand well. You surely can teach yourself, but it's not that easy.I have this feeling while I learn French by myself. It's very hard....so,I still don't master French.LOL... Homework is given by the teachers to help up to understand more the subject and by this thing we could apply what we have learned.

I agree. Plus I don't think all people are disciplined enough to keep challenging themselves to learn.
