I've never visited India, but I'd like to (am intrigued by all the stuff on India posted on MyLot!).
But India seems very large (as large as Europe), so where do Indians recommend I visit?
Also, has anyone from outside India visited as a tourist, and what are your impressions and recommendations?

Its nice to know that you are planning to visit India. Places that are a must see in India are Delhi - which is the capital of India, Mumbai - its the financial capital of India, Goa - famous for its beaches, Kashmir, Agra - has The Taj Mehal.

Thanks for replying. I had heard of Goa and had thought of a trip there. Isn't Kashmir dangerous?

Kashmir was dangerous erlier but not now. I had been to Shimla in Kashmir with scholl friends and we have had a very good time there in the snow. Thats one of the very few tourist places in India were it snows. I also tried ice skating but then realised its not my sport ^_^

Ok, I hadn't realised that things had calmed down in Kashmir. All we hear on the news over here are about the problems there (but I guess that's more on the Pakistan part of the Kashmir border).
Re ice-skating, I sympathise, I struggle to keep my balance too! Britain has a mild temperate climate, which means that we don't get much snow or ice in winter. As a result we are rubbish at winter sports compared to the northern europeans.

When you will planning to visit in India ? we all Indians are well come you at this great colorful country. My friends gave you lot of ideas to visit at different places here. One of my friend mentioned about the place Shimla which was the summer capital of British government before Independence of India. Shimla is my Home District that is famous for tourist hill station. People enjoy here snow very much.
I hope you will like this place also. One of the posting you have asked about the Ooty. Ooty is also very beautiful place to visit. This is the only famous hill station in State of Maharashtra (Near Bombay). There is a lot of places where you can visit in India which is not possible to mention here all of those but some of good to see and visit are: Ooty in Maharashtra, off course Goa for beautiful beaches, Mansoory Near Dehradoon, Shimla my Home town, TajMehal Near Delhi are the places of mine favorites.
If you will come at Shimla please contact me.

We were intending to visit in December, as I understand the moonsoon is over then. We will probably only manage about two weeks, so it's going to be difficult choosing where to go.
Given all the information on this thread, I may need several trips!

I beg your pardon I have given wrong information about the place Ooty. The hill tourists place Ooty is not in Maharashtra instead it is in the State of Tamilnadu. You can approach Ooty from both Bombay and IT city Bangalore, all most the same distance from both the places.

Sounds like I need three visits. I might start with Goa-Mumbai. I gather Ooty is in southern India, and I'd be interested in visiting the south. A friend of mine visited India and said the south (in particular Kerala) was beautiful, but they didn't like the north much.

India is a huge country and has so many wonderful places for people to see which is beautiful and welcoming. There are already many suggestions below as to where to visit but the thing to remember is that wherever you go in India you will find a warm welcome as visitors to the country are treated with affection and the utmost respect unlike many other countries which treat tourists as a nuisance.
There are any number of review sites to visit to read more detail about some of the best places to visit such as Goa, Darjeeling, Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Pune, etc. I would recommend picking a few places you'd like to see and then reading as much as you can about those places to read the sort of sights that would attract you the most, such as restaurants or mountains or nightclubs or theme parks, etc...
Good luck and one more point. It's impossible to visit India for just one week. You'll need at least 2! I'm going in November for 3 weeks and intend to visit Darjeeling (as it's been compared to Switzerland in its beauty) during my trip too :)

I'd gathered that it was impossible to visit India for just a week! In fact it might take years of visits!. We've sort of decided to start with Goa, with perhaps Mumbai and ooty. If we like it, then we may visit again another year.

Excuse my typo in the first sentence "which are beautiful and welcoming" LOL It's a pity you can't edit your own comments here!
