Smoke Monster theory and Mr. Eko's death

What is the Smoke Monster? Is it just an imagination? At first, I've a theory that it is just an imagination. Those characters are haunted by their past and see things. But since Mr. Eko was killed by it, it seems to me that it is not imagination at all. What do you think?
Besides, I still don't get it how com Mr. Eko will end up like this. Just before he met the smoke monster, he notice that the brother figure that he saw is actually not his brother. Does it mean anything? His last words to Locke, is it true that they are the next?

If you do a little lost research online you will find that one of the majors experiments that Dharma was trying to conduct was Nanotechnology! Think about that. Extremely smart particles, the size of cells, that can think and respond to things. Well, just a theory!

That's an interesting point! Nanotechnology, is it those tiny robots that can fix your cell problem? You've got a point there. Let's assume that is a robot of some sort, but why it keeps attacking people? Do you think that's out of control?

That's right, I still don't understand why they(probably the producer) kill the character Eko. I think the audience like Eko and he is becoming popular during the last part of Season 2. I don't get it. If they didn't kill Eko, I think he will become one of the core member or even leader.

I think the Smoke Monster is a demon. Have you noticed that he killed Eko, and would have caused Charlie to kill Aaron? A demon can warp your mind and make you believe in what is not true. Now I wonder how the smoke monster got there in the first place. I sort of imagine the big wigs of Dharma dressed all in red hooded garments, a pentagram, and chanting ----
