I was looking into getting vista, of course, im going to need a better video card, and probably another gig of ram. My processor is fine though.
My question is, is it worth the upgrade? what's so special about it?
as far as i can tell its just "prettier".

I'd recommend you stick with Windows XP at the moment. Vista has lot of software incompatibilites at the moment, not to mention it is expensive. Wait for a couple of months then consider upgrading. =)

Vista is basically Xp but ramped up on "show" aspects. Specifically not many programs have adapted to it yet, so like most people I would not use it yet. The operating system alone takes up nearly 1gb or 2gb of your hard drive which is pretty hefty and besides that it's mostly for the "show" of your desktop then anything else. It's just pretty hyped up is made for the newer dual processors and quad processors that will eventually come out to help optimize their performance because as of now, there's not many programs that are fully using the dual processing chips power.

vista is damm good operating system.but i dont think that its worth purchasing right now because of its cost.with that cost you can purchas 5 genuine XP versions.so i would recommand you to wait for some time and in the mean time update your PC according to vista needs.vista needs minimum 512mb RAM.

Right now, it's not worth the upgrade. Its an Operating system that uses massive reasources. And most computer will be slow to run it. Im gonna wait, till its required for most applications, then i will upgrade my pc to run it. Or just build a new pc all together. :) Just my thoughts on that!

don't buy that crap is worthless, is more complicated then xp and had a lot of unnecesary things that make your pc work harder. I'm telling you this because i had it and had a lot of problems. The first thing i dont like about it is that not all programs work on it, a lot of programs that i use. You should buuy it in 2 years time or so maybe their going to improve it.

I don't use Microsoft products, but my general feeling is this: if your existing system already does everything you want or need it to do, then why bother upgrading? My home system is over 6 years old and it's fine for web surfing, video, music, IM, whatever.
Now, if there's something Vista does that XP doesn't do, and it really matters to you, then go ahead and upgrade. Otherwise, wait. If possible, wait until you need a new computer -- then you'll most likely get Vista as part of the deal, and the new computer will be faster and have more memory and more features than the ones available today.
