So what's your favorite Opeth album, folks? I'll have to with Damnation myself, it's usually a bit overlooked by the band fans due to it lacking the death metal elements that so well charachterize the band and being probably too soft, but it has some of the most beautiful progressive melodies I've ever heard. Another favorites are My Harms, Your Hearse and their latest, Ghost Reveries. I've actually written a review about it that you can read around my blog if you're interested:

I regretably havn't had the opportunity to listen to a full Opeth album. I've heard many songs by them and I enjoy listening to them a lot. Since I can't name a favorite album, I'll list a few of my favorite songs. I really enjoy Deliverance, Blackwater Park and I believe its called Window Pane. I could be wrong though.

Yeah, the song names are correct. Oh my, I won't forgive myself for having forgotten Blackwater Park, that's my second favorite actually. You should give it a go to a full album, I recommend you start by Blackwater Park actually. Windowpane is my favorite all-time Opeth song, good choice.

I've only recently started listenig to opeth and their first album i got was Damnation. Its a well done album with good melodic songs and very technical riffs although not really heavy like the other albums.

I wouldn't quite reccomend Damnation for starters even though it stands as being my favorite album, but you see, it's a total different atmosphere from what are their standards within that album. Thanks for your reply.

Morningrise...
Black Rose Immortal is the most beautiful, amazing song I've ever heard (even if Opeth are not my favourite band o__O)

Yeah, Damnation is indeed a masterpiece on it's own, so smooth and yet so deep. Hope Leaves is a good one but is not among my favorites from that album. I have yet to watch the Lamentations DVD...thanks for reminding on that one.

I have to agree with you that Damnation is a wonderful album. Personally though, I've grown to like Ghost Reveries a lot. Enough for it to become my favorite album. From the opening track (Ghosts of Perdition) with it's incredible power and force, to the beautiful/serene Atonement and all in between. It's quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite albums.

I see your point and respect your personal taste, but for me it's hard to see how can Ghost Reveries be a favourite...it certainly is a top quality album, but looking at Damnation or Blackwater Park, I stop, and think to myself, "these guys have done better in the past". Thanks for your input.

Best Opeth Album? Very hard question... :-)I like 'em all 'cause every album has it's own great songs and you can hear the progress the band is going through with each new album. It's just a fantastic band!
But to answer your question anyway. Deliverence and Ghost Reveries. Deliverence was the first album I heard. And it was for me the first time, hearing Martin Lopez playing this awsome groove on the drums. A groove, I've never heard til this day. You can hear it at the end of "Master's Apprentices"... there's nothing more to say, hear it and it will blow you away :-)
I also like the older albums and own them all. And as I said... very difficult question you've ask here :-)

I'm not such a big fan of Deliverance. I mean, it does have some good songs here and there but all around it has also a fair share of not so strong songs. Ghost Reveries is definitly more solid, though.

My Arms, Your Hearse and Morningrise are two of my favorties. Came across them at a used CD store; they were selling the tin versions for $3.00 a piece so I couldn't pass it up. You'd be surprised at the people that get Opeth and Otep mixed up LOL

Hahah...what a BARGAIN! I wish I could find CD's that cheap. Nice to see a fan of their older stuff for a change, they were still very experimental and obscure back then, an acquired taste for most. And nah...might sound similar, but Opeth are by far superior to those guys.

Blackwater Park, at the moment. I just prefer the songs on there to the songs on their other albums....not that the other albums are any less awesome! My opinion changes weekly =)

I've not listened to many Opeth albums but till now, Damnation is my favorite album. I just love the way those songs go. They're so melodious and sung well ! I simply love the mild guitars in that album ! It's something exciting to listen to and it helps me a lot when I'm in distress. I just turn on the Damnation CD and my God, it's so pleasing ! :)
