I have directv and we don't get all the extras but it still costs us $50 a month. I wonder when I am flipping through and seeing nothing but reruns if it's worth the money. Whenever I think about shutting it off I think what am I going to do to entertain my husband more then anything else. I need the tv to keep him out of my hair when he is home, but we have gotton to the point that we need to cut something. My husband may be out of work for a while and my income isn't enough to cover everything.

if you keep getting reruns then no i dont' think it's worth it. it's just wasting your money. how about buying movies that he can watch at home when he wants and he can pick which one to watch at what time? that's what i do.

im not sure whether its good enough in ur case. but in my case its well worth. i love discovery, net geo, history channel and few of those news channels. discovery is really a good and informative one. there is not a single moment that i didnt learn anything from discovery. and moreever getting home after a hard day, its really worth sitting infront of tv with some snacks and juice. its perfect for me to relax.

I felt like you once, flipping through 500 channels and finding out that indeed, there was nothing on.
I now have ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX and PBS. I won't pay for cable or satellite again. What I might suggest though is signing up at Netflix.com for a membership. I have the 3 at a time program and with tax it's 19.07 a month. I get to see lots of TV and movies without the frustration of commercials.
If your husband is in your hair when he gets home from work, give him a chore to do. He'll either win brownie points for being helpful, or he'll leave you alone.

My husband and I have decided that premium TV services aren't worth the cost any more. We had cable before we moved, and he would sit there flipping and flipping and finding nothing. When we moved we tried to have cable hooked up, but we live 652' from the nearest line, so they refused to hook us up. We got rabbit ears and started watching the local channels. We found out we can get along just fine with only those channels, and it isn't costing us a fortune every month to watch infomercials.

I think that even $50 a month is pretty expensive if you aren't watching a good majority of the channels. We only pay between $20-30 and I don't think that my famliy watches nearly enough of the cable channels to even make that worth it, at least quite. What would be great is if we could just pay for the specific channels that we really like. But of course the networks are never going to allow us to do that, because they wouldn't be able to make nearly as much.
I guess that you have to make the decision for yourself if it is worth it, if you can't get something more cheaply that would be enough entertainment for your husband. If you know that it wouldn't work out to get rid of the direcTV setup that you have, if it really would be too hard for your husband to live without it and he would be bothering you, then I hope that you can live with paying the amount per month that they want. I just wish that you could get something cheaper. That really is a large cost per month :/

Is it worth it? It depends. Sometimes I think we could get by just doing the local channels, but my husband is the one who works & he loves watching sports & I don't really feel like I have the right to take that away from him--since I'm not working. I don't think TV should cost that much but because it does-- if you need to cut something the TV is the best one to cut because you DONT need it & you can rent movies & it doesn't have to be permenant that you cancel anything-- it can be until your husband gets a different job or isn't laid off anymore-- then you can reconnect it.

Depending on how much you actually watch television it can be worth it. I always seem to find something watchable via Directv(but to be fair, I mostly watch Discovery and ESPN programing)

Television is definitely not worth that much money a month and am considering canceling mine as well and keep just basic cable which is much less. I can get all the news information on the internet. The only thing that I would miss are my sports events. I am trying to find ways to cut some bills and that would be my first choice.

thats quite a bit. ours was around that much when we had cable internet hooked up to it. we don't use direct, but digital cable. i like it better then satalite tv (thats what direct tv is right?). i think if you're in a bind, basic cable should do. i mean he can always watch videos or play games if you got some. or just have him find something else to do. i have the tv for myself, and my kids. they watch in the mornings and i watch in the evenings.

i know its costly but at the end of the day it works out cheaper than losing your sanity i mean atleast yours and your husbands mind is occupied. when i am at work, atleast my wife has an option of watching her favorite programs over and over again. during the weekends, we hardly watch any tv but yes its an option that we use sometimes. maybe you can bring down the cost a little by disconnecting some of the premium channels.

Is it worth it? Well, for me, no, for my husband, maybe, for the kids, yes! No, I am not the parent who sits their child infront of the tv all day. However, I do offer it as a reward. For example, when my son has done well at school, he gets an hours worth of programming, when he has done all his homework, he gets 30 minutes and after bath time, he gets an additional 30 minutes. He is 6 and knows that it is a thing that is easily taken away and at times he doesn't care but others, especially sick days etc..he loves the tv. My 2 year old loves music and dance so she gets "active" with the Wiggles and Doodlebops! I don't approve of TV sitting as it is called. However it can be a very nice thing for a parent to offer as a goody! If it were just myself and my husband? It would have been long gone! I too have Directv and feel it is outrageously priced for just the basics! I guess that it is still cheaper than our local cable but... I feel you! Trust me. We most all do. Have you considered working online? I mean, other than mylot? I get paid by several companies, just contact me if you want and I can email you some links or post them here if you prefer. That's how I pay for our internet service now!

No it is not worth $50-100 for me. That is why I don't have a cable. I like Netflix at $10 month and I get to watch all the new releases and I get to pick what I watch rather than the junk other people put on TV for me.

so just switch from directv to regular cable you still get sports and then you really aren't paying for the shows that aren't worth watching

We pay about $80 a month for a digital cable and high speed Internet bundle. I'm super happy because I get (besides 250 channels) Discovery Health and Science plus I get tons of music and video channels.
If you say he is in your hair, maybe you should turn off your cable service and go out with him more often to reconnect. $50 is expensive for basic cable though. Are there cheaper cable companies where you live? Also look into Satellite TV companies on the Internet. It is new technology and is pretty cheap. Try http://www.wi-fitv.com/ as it is free right now! Plus you can make free long-distance calls from this site.

Personally, I don't think so, my husband and I weighed it all out and it didn't make sense to us to put out that kind of money every month, I mean add it up yearly and you are spending 1,000 or more a year. And I like to vacation.
So we invest in DVD's, videos, I use our local library a lot for these. And we share/borrow from friends etc. We even have it where will share our rentals with friends and visa versa because at minimum its 3 days so why waste the time. Also, I can get some of the shows I like right on the computer for free. And actually my husband just asked a few days how do we every get anything done when we had the tv. Encourage your husband to get a hobby , or give him the honeydo list to keep him busy. A lot of the time I just send mine out to play with the dog and sit in the sunshine. :)

Hell no its not worth it. The sattelite and cable companies are making a killing off of us. They charge that much because they know they can. People are too addicted to TV to go without it. They are willing to pay anything for nothing.

If having directv would be much of a financial burden, then forgo with it. It's not that important in our lives. A lot of people around us don't have it anyway. It is really a matter of choice.
Besides, once you're rid of it, you will find more ways to spend time fruitfully.

Yeah thats a lot. I think i'm paying like $50-60 for comcast digital cable and comcast internet. Try BLOCKBUSTER online. Its so much better than like net flix, you bring the movie they mail you into the store and a free rental of ANY movie. Last week I think my wife and I had like 8 movies all from online and the instore free rental.
