Don't you hate it when you go out to eat and you feel a little queasey after? Well it might not be the food!I caught an episode of Oprah and she had young geniuses on the show.
A 12 year old girl had entered the Science Fair an did a study on bacteria in ice cubes. Her findings were disgusting!!!!!!!!! In most establishments the ice cubes had more bacteria than the TOILET WATER!!!!!!There was an official from the health department in the audience and he agreed that this actually was a problem due to improper hand washing and cleaning of the ice machines.
I'll have a Coke NO ice please!!!!

I believe this wholeheartedly. I worked in a restaurant when I was in college, and we'd pull all kids of weird stuff out of the ice machine. Problem is, everyone thinks becasue it's cold there would be nothing growing in it. The problem is the water line where it runs water into the machine to be frozen. There's no easy way to get to it and clean it.

Eww! Oh my goodness, that makes me so glad that I usually didn't take ice with my drinks when I used to go out to eat more. Especially if we were allowed to serve ourselves, I never put much ice (if any) into my drink because I didn't care about my drink being that cold, and that way I could get more drink into the cup *laugh* So I probably avoided quite a bit of that nasty bacteria.
That's really disgusting.. it'll definitely make me think twice next time I see a drink being served with ice cubes!

I have worked in a lot of food establishment and I must agree with this. A long time ago when I worked for these places I had to fill the drink orders, not let the customer do it. So I had control over the condition my ice and drink dispenser was in.
I always go through a drive thru for that very reason. The drive-thru has full control over their ice bins and most of the time when they are not busy in drive-thru they have to be cleaning. These ice bins are checked several times a day if the management is any good at all.
When you leave an ice bin out for the public to get their own no telling what is thrown in there or what kids has put their hands in them. I know most of them dispense the ice and it is an icemaker, but even these get neglected when it comes time to clean up and close.
I almost do not even eat out because of all the germs in a food establishment.

Well that's the most disgusting thing I've read so far today. I never gave it any thought
before this. I used to alway get my drinks with no ice. Not because of germs, just because I don't like the ice hitting my mouth. Now I just use a straw. However, in light of this discussion, I think I'll go back to no ice..lol Thanks for sharing this with us, I missed that show.

Never have ice with my scotch when I'm in a pub.
A little story.
In a pub with my son, his wife and my wife one evening and I sat next to my daughter in law at the bar and I reached over to get some nuts which were on the counter in a bowl. She slapped my hand and I looked at her surprised and she said, "Sorry Dad but you mustn't eat those because I've just read that there are 90% germs in there from people who go to the 'john' and don't wash their hands before they take the nuts or cheese from the bar!
So I believe you about the ice!

Evacuee, you are exactly right! I have sat at a bar before (part of a college research experimetn) and watched people sneeze on their hands, cough on their hands etc and reach in for nuts. When the bowl was empty, the bartender simply filled it again. Later, new patrons came in and ate from the same bowl.YUK!

Wow, the things that you really never think about and assume are taken care of in your favorite places to dine can really be bad for your health. I never thought about the ice machine. I was going to say that I prefer water at a restaurant, but they use ice as well. I guess I will go thirsty next time.

You know, it is getting to where we should just stay home and eat. It is absolutely disgusting to think that even our ice isn't clean. Have you ever seen one of those shows that discusses and shows how contaminated self-serve salad bars are?
