Do you go to the library?

I can honestly say that before I had kids, I never went to the library. Then when my girls were born, our local library had a story hour for the kids. They loved going! The teacher was wonderful and she always did a craft with the kids, besides reading them a book. They loved being able to check out books each week and it was always such a big deal to pick out the perfect book.
Now that my kids are grown, I don't go as often, but my youngest still loves to go to the library to see what new books come in. I think it's great that she enjoys it so much.
Do you go to the library? What kind of books do you read? Have you ever taken your children to a story time program?

I go to the library whenever I have spare time. Which is rarer these days..but I still find exuses to go and hang out til the place closes. Or I should say places..since I have a tendency to hang out at..many..libraries. *coughs*
I read a bit of everything..though not romances so much, since I blatantly hate most of those. I have a special fondness for horror, sci-fi, and fantasy though.
My family's big book people mostly, reading fanatics lol. There's hardly a room without books in them. =)

I used to go often, but now that I have my computer, everything I want to read is right at my fingertips. When I do feel like getting my hands on a book, it's usually so good that I don't want to take it back, and so I end up buying myself a copy.

I used to go to the Library, but I have to admit I don't go anymore.
I want to own my books, so kind of defets the purpose of going to the Library. I am very picky about my books. lol
I read EVERYTHING really. I love romance with mystery, mystery/horror/thrillers, true crimes, bios, local history, & some sci-fi now.

I've been hanging in libraries all of my life. It was a place we used to go to after school when I was a kid to hook up with other kids from other schools. This is an area with a lot of public, Catholic & private schools and the kids from different schools used to meet in the library and get to know each other. We sometimes got kicked out of the library for causing a ruckus and kids still do I've noticed. Also the library kept the summer reading lists for all the different schools so we all had to go there to see what we were supposed to read over the summer. Yes, I've gone to the story time and also to the book signings. Libraries are also good places to take out free DVD's. About the only thing I've never done at the library is join a book club. I like to pick my own books and don't especially need to discuss what I'm reading although a lot of friends have told me that the book clubs there are very good....What really surprises me is that libraries seem, at least where I live, to be busier than ever. I'm really glad to see that....I read a lot of fiction and I have a passion for decorating books. I kind of rotate glancing at them as if they were magazines and get a lot of mileage out of them so it justifies the price. I sell books so mostly I buy my own books but I still go to the library a couple times a month and check things out.Unfortunately, my library fees for fiction are often higher than what I pay for books. (I don't pay much) I never could seem to get books back to the library on time.
PS I just remembered one more thing libraries are good for. When your computer is down, there is always one you can use at the library.

When I was younger through my public Junior to High school years. I loved going to the library. My favorite day was Saturdays, because of the lineup of different activities available.
All I needed was a library card and 'Barney in Space' and many other young reader books along with a host of musical records, were coming home with me for hours of learnning and fun.
The librarians and a few volunteers were my guide to new adventures by suggesting new topics and genre. They motivated me to return every weekend and participate in clubs such as writing, crafts and puppet theatre the latter was the most rewarding and memorable impact on my life.
For a long while my Mom & Dad also became interested because of the positive results this all had at school. I even stopped watching television for a while, which through my friends for a curve. They've always considered me a T.V. baby.
Now I'm much older with a full time job, a family and a mortgage. I went to college for librarian technician.
Through my learning I've found that information can be extracted from almost anywhere with a little know how. And with our keen interest to get our children associated with the internet, add our face pace lifestyle, libraries as we know it are coming to an end.
At the moment I don't have kids, but I know for a fact that a well developed imagination can be very rewarding. If I had children I would introduce them to a library and various services such as craft, puppets, story time, etc...

Wonderful post!!! You have a great writing ability... no wonder you love the library so much!
I agree that unfortunately, libraries as we know them may soon come to an end. Our small public library in our town had to cut back their hours because of funding. How very sad...
Thanks so much for the great response!

I have gone to the library lots in the past. I haven't been there recently but I find it a great resource if you're looking to learn about something or if you're doing research for something. There are so many different resources you can take advantage of while you're there to help you get information on subjects you're interested in. I like that the city has something set up for the public to use on a daily basis. Even if the library cards have a small join up fee, it's worth it in the long run.
My other half had a library card for about a year or so and I found we were using it s lot to go get novels and other books like that. They're great to have for long bus rides or just long trips in general. My other half would read on the way to and from work on the bus. His daily commute is roughly about an hour so it helps to kill the time during the trip. Myself, I just like having some novels to read while my other half is sleeping (he goes to bed before me sometimes) or even just when I need a break from reality.
I like to personally read a lot of novels. Romance novels are kind of a guilty pleasure for me and I own a few that my other half has read and enjoyed. Those would be the kind of books I would borrow. My other half, when he has gone to the library, tends to take out adventure novels. Me, I like V.C.Andrews and I will read pretty much anything written by her. I've always liked her as an author and I've never been disappointed in what she's written. I also enjoy novels with those real life stories about crime or stuff like that.
I always liked it when I was in school they had book fairs too where they were selling books. I always ended up buying books from there and they usually would have coupons where the more I read, eventually I would qualify for a free pizza from pizza hut. I always liked that, a reward for reading more. Sometimes we'd get a star depending on how much we read over a period of time and if we got enough, we'd qualify for a reward of some other type.
So, in conclusion, I've always liked going to the library and so has my other half. We like the idea of having a place to go to where we can borrow books if we have a problem in the house that we need a solution for. In essence, the library is a perfect place to get books that are educational and entertaining at the same time.

OUr library sometimes has a story hour for kids too. I don't have kids but I think it's great! And if I did have kids I would DEFINATELY take them. I used to go to the library more often but now I just buy my books rather than "rent" them. I guess it would save me a lot of money and this is probably a materialistic thing, but I feel better owning them. It's stupid I know, but I do. So now the only time I go is if I need a book for school or something.

My family loves to go to the library. We do homeschool so it gives us a place to go to break the monotony. Don't get me wrong, we don't sit at home everyday, but during the winter months the weather does'nt always permit
parks, zoo's, etc. The library is a nice educational, climate controlled outing! Not to mention it's free!

Yes, I'm an avid reader. I use the public library and also my school library. I go primarily for books and to read or borrow magazines. My public library has a great online system where you can do searches and place a request for books in other branches. I've also placed holds on really popular books which I otherwise wouldn't have been able to read until they came out in paperback. My school library is great for research and also just as a quiet place to work.

Unfortunantly my local library is somewhat stale. Its small and dosen't have much new stuff in it. The two local bookstores are actualy bigger with vaster collections.
I usually just buy the books I want. I'm not a big reader so I tend to take my time and don't want to have to keep taking the book back to renew it. A lot of the books I read are reference materials so having them onhand dosen't hurt either.

Well, I do go to the library. It is fun. And I like reading a lot so I do read. When I was a college freshman, I would hang out at the library because that is where my best friends are : the books!
